About Nathan Brady:

I am a dedicated and driven professional who is committed to do my best in everything I set my mind to. Throughout my life, I have developed a strong work ethic. Successfully completing a NVQ in sports science, an undergraduate degree in sports development and sport exercise therapy and a post graduate diploma in education leading to a successful career as a full-time primary school teacher for eight years. I am confident that I have learnt key transferrable skills to help me transition into a career within the electrical trade.

My aim is to become a fully qualified electrician and I believe my prior work experience will help me succeed as I have many transferable skills. Such as, a curiosity to learn new skills, a passion for personal development, strong communication skills, adept problem-solving abilities, an unwavering perseverance and robust work-ethic.

I am reliable and understand the value of working as part of a team, as well as on my own initiative.  I have experience in working in the sports coaching and leisure industry, sales, retail trade and education. I currently work at a local Primary teacher, in which I have the responsibility to plan and deliver lessons.

I have excellent communication skills and I am used to communicating with students, colleagues, and the public via face to face, email and over the telephone.  I also have excellent ICT skills and can use the internet and all Microsoft software such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint.

To develop a sound knowledge prior to embarking on a new role within the electrical industry, I have independently funded and enrolled on to a City & Guilds level two electrical installations diploma, which I have now passed. Demonstrating my commitment to my future career choice. I have a valid ECS card and wish to gain hands-on experience working as an Electrician’s Mate. I aim to progress on to the level 3 Electrical Installation Course and aim to complete the 18th edition and 2357 L3 NVQ.

Experience

Experience, skills and what I can offer

My background is in education as I have been working as a full-time primary teacher for the past 8 years. Since November 2023, I have been dedicated to pursuing a career as an electrician. Whilst working full time, I have been gaining experience working with qualified electricians through a local management, maintenance and home improvement company, ‘Rykneld Homes’, who work on behalf of North East Derbyshire District Council. Such experience has developed my knowledge and confidence in domestic electrical installations, maintenance, and repairs. Under supervision, I have wired and terminated sockets, installed light fittings, and repaired damaged isolators and switches. I have replaced and fitted outside flood lights and worked as part of a small team to do a first fix in a bathroom. Additionally, whilst working at Rykneld Homes, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to support with the testing and inspection of domestic properties. I was introduced to the dead and live tests that needed to be completed and took part in testing for continuity, polarity, and insulation resistance. This gave me a huge insight into health and safety regulations and procedures. Alongside working at Rykneld Homes, and working full time within the education sector, I have completed the 2365 Level 2 Electrical Installations Course. This course has developed my knowledge of electrical principles, procedures, and formulas. Through assessment, I have demonstrated that I understand how to conduct a safe isolation using a voltage indicator and proving unit, and I have proven my ability to use the 7671 onsite guide to inform me on best practices around cabling, conduit and trunking selection and circuit breaker selection for specific circuits. The practical assessment also involved me demonstrating my competence in wiring a ring final circuit and a radial circuit. I had to thread steel conduit and created a 90-degree angle of PVC conduit using a bending string.

Through experience and study, I have gained a range of skills that I believe would make me an ideal candidate to undertake an apprenticeship at OHUK. For example, confidence using a range of power tools and hand tools, a keen eye for detail and knowledge already acquired through my Level 2 course. I demonstrate effective listening skills daily in my current role and I am able to follow instructions accurately.

The electricians that I have worked with have led by example, ensuring customers are treated with respect and empathy and always understand realistic time frames for completing works and the intended benefit of the work being completed. This has taught me that you are always the face of who you work for and therefore it is important to have excellent customer service skills – ensuring that the customer feels that they are getting the best service possible.

The valuable skills I have gained as a primary teacher are transferable. Such skills include problem solving, communication, interpersonal skills and working as part of a team. Planning and delivering lessons develops a combination of all these skills, as the aim is to ensure that thirty children with a range of learning needs and abilities get the most out of every learning opportunity. I have gained the ability to adapt to dynamic situations, as no day is the same, and there are always challenges that I need to overcome. For example, my interactive whiteboard malfunctioned, which meant that I could not present any lessons planned. I overcame this challenge by remaining calm and thinking on my feet to teach practically using my whiteboard and resources that had been prepared in advance. I have excellent organisational skills – being a teacher has taught me that you need to be extremely organised to ensure all resources and equipment is prepared to guarantee that lessons run smoothly and therefore children can learn with minimal distractions.

If appointed, I will be a determined and dependable member of your team. Who will always strive to do their best. I will consistently show a positive mind-set, curiosity, and a passion for continuous development. Ensuring I adhere to guidelines and protocols set out to ensure safe practice in the workplace. I will show a resilience to overcome any challenge and ensure that I am punctual, organised and professional at all times.
