Copeland Talking Newspaper, Queen Street, Whitehaven

Apr 2023 - Present

I carry out voluntary work at the Copeland Talking Newspaper. This is a registered charity and records readings of the Whitehaven News each week and delivers these to around 150 people in the area who are blind or visually impaired.  I am an experienced team member and on a rota where my duties alternate between doing the readings and being a technician – recording and editing the speakers recordings and copying to audio media.

NCSC Cyber First ‘Advanced’, Energus.

14th - 18th Aug 2023

A follow-up one week course to the earlier Cyber First ‘Defender’ course that I completed the year previously.  I wanted to build upon the things I learnt during Cyber First ‘Defender’ and further develop my understanding of computers and cyber-security in general.  I did similar things to the first course, but at a more advanced level.  For example, I had to track down a person using meta data present inside a photo that they took of themselves and also, I had to track down a cyber-criminal using meta data present in files and photos that they sent to us. 

Sellafield Ltd (Y10 Work Experience), Sellafield Fire & Rescue.

3rd - 7th July 2023

I undertook a week long work experience placement at Sellafield Fire & Rescue (SF&R). I wanted to work on the Sellafield site to gain a knowledge and awareness of the size, complexity and procedures to follow while working on the site.  During the week I was there I learnt about SF&R and undertook first aid training, used the ‘jaws of life’, how to put on breathing apparatus (BA sets), used fire-fighting equipment like the water cannon and worked as team member with the other work experience students and SF&R staff.

NCSC Cyber First ‘Defenders’, Energus.

8th - 12th Aug 2022

I participated in a one week course at Energus. I wanted to better understanding of computers and cyber-security and also learn about any potential threats to my online safety and that of others.  Throughout the week I spent there, I learnt about Energus and participated in several activities such as setting up a router and gaining access to it; setting up a LAN network and playing a game of Counter-Strike on it and getting access to a remote controlled camera and piloting it.

Sellafield Ltd (Y9 Work Experience), Unit 6, Leconfield Industrial Estate, Cleator Moor.

15th/16th Feb 2022

I spent two days at the Sellafield Centre of Engineering Excellence at the Leconfield Industrial Estate learning about the work that Engineering and Maintenance do at Sellafield.  During my time there I piloted a drone, took control of Spot the Dog, built electronic circuits and programmed a robot.
