Services offered

I have recently completed my MSc in Play Therapy with merit to become a play therapist, I have 3 years’ experience working in a clinical setting, with over 10 years’ experience of working with children. During this time, I have worked within a mainstream primary school alongside other professionals and families to keep the child at the centre of their care. Within my role as a trainee play therapist I am responsible for; providing 50-minute weekly session for the child referred, continual assessment, supporting parents and carers, providing feedback, keeping process recordings and finally writing reports on the child’s progress. As a play therapist my role is to facilitate a space in which the child feels secure enough to process and master different experiences and skills. Within my career as a learning support assistant, I have worked as part of a multifactional team which is based in a fast-paced school setting in South Lanarkshire Council. This has provided several opportunities to work alongside children with specific learning requirements, which can range from learning, behavioural, emotional, attachment, and social development. As a requirement of my position, I participated in several learning and bereavement interventions, which were presented to the children and parents.

Approximate rate: £ 55 per hour

Experience

I have worked with children and families in different contexts. In the last ten years I have worked as a Play Therapist, Play Worker, Support for Learning Assistant, Child Protection Officer and Tutor.

Education

As a trainee play therapist within a mainstream primary school, the education staff will refer children to myself based on their experiences and issues. Through play therapy children can build emotional resilience and be able to understand and cope with experiences within a safe environment. As play is a natural form of expression for a child, play therapy offers an experience in which a child does not feel the pressure to work within someone else’s timeline.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and accept referrals from other supporting professionals in the child’s life.
  • Assess each child’s suitability for play therapy in the timeline offered.
  • Provide regular therapeutic sessions on a weekly basis to help the child understand issues they may be facing.
  • Build a therapeutic relationship with the child and a trusting relationship with their parent/carer.
  • Create a safe and secure environment for the child to express themselves within play.
  • Ensure safety within the playroom and with play equipment.
  • Seek support and advice from my clinical supervisor when needed.
  • Keep accurate process recordings, records, and reports when working with a child.
  • Protect confidentiality of the child and their parent/carer.
