About Olutoyin Oladipo:
Dear Ma/Sir,
I am Olutoyin Oladipo, a postgraduate Social Work Student at the University of Portsmouth. I am looking forward to joining your team as a Newly Qualified Social Worker. I believe that my education and experience would give me the necessary foundation to learn from you and make a positive impact as a member of your team.
I have had experience working in statutory and voluntary settings. During my seventy days placement at a supported accommodation, I worked with young people and women to assess their housing needs, supporting them to access welfare services. I had a caseload of five families each with their distinct needs. I adopted a person-centred approach in working with each family first to identify their needs and aspiration, Weekly one on one session is held to support their needs. For example, I have supported families to access welfare services such as child benefits, housing benefit, universal credit, maternity grants, food banks and parenting networks. In addition to this, I hold life skill sessions on budgeting, "move on" plans, cooking etc. During my placement with the organization, I was able to identify the need to revise some of the modules for life skill training. To accommodate the learning needs of my service users, I revised some of the learning modules to include pictures and clip art rather than just text. In addition to this, I was able to add new life skills modules on Money Management, Emotional Well-being and Physical Well being, I presented these learning modules to other support workers during a team meeting. I was able to develop a safety plan and contract of expectation template for the organization.
I have a dual role as a team member for the Edge of Care team and the Drug and Alcohol Support Services in my current placement. As part of the Edge of Care team, I deliver family intervention for families of young people that are at risk of children criminal exploitation. I also support young people who are at risk of exclusion from education. I support young people access services such as Personal Independence Payment, Universal Credit, Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services(CAMHS), and Prince Trust.
In my work with an immigrant family, I identified that one of the barriers for the children not accessing higher education was their immigration status. I was able to signpost them to organizations to support the family to regularize their immigration status, I worked with charities such as CORAM, the Joint Council for Welfare of Immigrants.
My role as a Substance Misuse practitioner involves working with young people who want to change their substance use behaviour by delivering drug interventions using Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and Dialectic Behavior Therapy. Depending on the need of the young people, I hold a weekly or fortnightly session to work directly with the young people.
During a session with a young person that I support, I identified the need for her to do STI screening. I was able to realize that her apprehension would be a barrier to her accessing the Sexual Health Clinic. I supported her to access the service by volunteering to accompany her. After the visit, she said " I have made one of the best decisions going to the sexual health clinic. I will not only be visiting I will be referring my friends.
Before pursuing a postgraduate degree in social work, I have had personal experience as a carer to an autistic brother. The following are some of the many attributes which make me a perfect candidate for this position:
I am a highly organized professional with extensive experience working in a team. I can effectively multitask, adapt to a new environment, and quickly learn new processes to achieve outstanding results. I have exceptional communication and relationship-building skills. I am reliable, resilient and can take initiative.
Furthermore, I am friendly, patient, and compassionate. I would welcome an opportunity for a personal interview to discuss my qualifications while learning more about your expectations.
Thank you.
