About Philip Kemp:
Counsellor and psychotherapist
Experience
Counsellor/psychotherapist (in private practice), Black Sheep Counselling & Psychotherapy
September 2021 – present
As a private practitioner, I have taken on a more active role in my practice. I have conducted assessments to establish the primary needs of my clients and assess risk, written and stored client notes in line with GPDR regulations, writing up my own counselling contract, and negotiating fees as appropriate to my clients’ financial limitations.
As well as offering counselling sessions both face-to-face and remotely (telephonic and video conferencing), I have played an active role in setting up my business. Completed administrative tasks include (but are not limited to) registering as a sole trader, updating my personal and public liability insurance, tallying business expenses against income, and registering my business trademark with the Intellectual Property Office; for the purpose of advertising, I have set up a Facebook page, as well as my own website.
I have also established a counselling office within my home, tailoring and furnishing the room to be an appropriate environment for the work, as well as offering amenities (i.e., hand sanitiser) and reasonable adjustments (i.e., appropriate space between chairs) in alignment with government recommended COVID-19 guidelines.
Counsellor, HBBS Counselling
August 2021 – present
Student counsellor/psychotherapist (person-centred/ Humanistic model), The Outhouse (formerly Outhouse East) and Essex CRC (Sodexo Justice – probation services)
July 2019 – September 2021
My primary responsibility as a student counsellor was the facilitation of contracted 50 minute face-to-face and remote (i.e., telephone) counselling sessions for adult clients with a range of presenting issues from both the LGBTQ+ community (The Outhouse) and the criminal justice system; my approach is primarily Humanistic/ person-centred*. Integral to my work is my adherence to the BACP’s Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions 2018: I maintain and store confidential client notes in alignment with GDPR regulations, as well as making necessary breaches to confidentiality in the event of safeguarding or legal reasons as outlined in the client contract; I also attend regular clinical supervision (both group and individual) as per BACP guidelines, working collaboratively with my supervisors to ensure that my work remains ethically sound and client-focused. I also adhere to agency guidelines, having had experience of managing contracts and appointments with clients in both agencies, as well as receiving mandated LGBTQ+ training and liaising with the responsible officers of my clients at The Outhouse and probation service, respectively. In order to enhance my practice, I undertake Continuous Professional Development (CPD, e.g., engaging in courses, undertaking research etc.,), as well as collaborating with (and signposting clients to) third party organisations as appropriate within a multi-disciplinary team.
*individual techniques (e.g., written affirmations) and approaches were integrated from other modalities [i.e., cognitive-behavioural therapy] where it was deemed necessary). Integral to my work was the maintenance of confidential client notes in alignment with GDPR regulations, as well as making ne
Customer services assistant, J Sainsbury (Sainsbury’s)
October 2017 – October 2018
My role as a customer services assistant involved several tasks. As well as processing customer transactions, my responsibilities also included restocking products, maintaining the tidiness of service areas and tilling up at the end of my shift. I also managed customer queries and complaints with patience and appropriate action, signposting to senior members of staff if I found myself unable to help. I also received training on various tills within the store, being able to assist customers on regular tills as well as more technologically advanced services such as Smart Shop and self-service. I also acted in a supervisory capacity on several occasions, assisting colleagues with enquiries as well as retrieving products from the shop floor for customers when requested.
Bar associate, JD Wetherspoon (Wetherspoons)
April 2017 – August 2017
My work as a bar associate for JD Wetherspoon was a challenging role. Being trained both behind the bar and on the pub floor, I was often required to switch roles at short notice during high intensity shifts, serving customers through processing (often large) food and drink orders, as well as providing table service and ensuring service areas were tidy and hygienic. In order to fulfil this role, I received training on tills and Think25, as well as receiving instruction on how to produce a variety of drinks such as cocktails. I also dealt with customer complaints and enquiries, remaining patient and courteous within high-stress situations. Integral to my work within the company was the ability to work as part of a team: I developed a camaraderie with my colleagues, providing (and receiving) support and encouragement and working collaboratively through extensive and often demanding shifts.
Peer student mentor, Havering Sixth Form College
November 2015 – May 2016
I, with a group of friends, in collaboration with my college’s safeguarding officer (a qualified psychotherapist), established a peer mentoring scheme. The aim was to provide the opportunity for fellow students to discuss personal and emotional difficulties in a warm, non-judgmental environment. I received brief training in safeguarding, agreeing to contact my safeguarding officer immediately in the event that a safeguarding concern would arise. I also organised and facilitated weekly hour-long sessions with my supervisee, making prior contact to ensure that appointments were attended in line with our individual timetables, as well as negotiating cancellations.
