About Ronald Sibanda:
I was able to do 10 months of work experience during my placement year of my university course at Liverpool Royal & Broadgreen Hospital where I have been able to gain invaluable experience as a medical laboratory assistant. In this duration i was based in the microbiology department being competent in testing procedures such as urine testing, sensitivity testing, and MRSA tests.
I am able to follow safe procedures and practices within a laboratory like for example the use of aseptic techniques to be able to prevent any contamination. I am able to use LIMS to log in patient data and I am always updating my knowledge by completing mandatory training within the NHS Electronic Staff Record website for programs linked to Health & safety for example. My job role and responsibilities included the labelling, preparation and testing of samples whilst being in line with the companies & policies in regard to confidentiality and data protection
During my time at University, I had undergone several investigation such as conducting PCR tests to determine whether the patients had the FH gene or not and then further state if they were either homozygous or heterozygous as the results of the patients were compared to the negative and positive control. Also, a cholesterol assay was done to find out the level of cholesterol within the blood was high or low by working out the concentration in mg/dl. After recording this data in a table along with the absorbance of the samples that were being data, I plotted a graph within excel; this was a standard curve to show the ‘absorbance vs cholesterol mass’. Whilst undergoing this project I was able to demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy of a high level whilst doing repetitive work with the samples. In my final year my dissertation project was to investigate the trends in biomarkers for high molecular weight late-stage heart failure. I was able to determine the proteins that were unique to a diseased heart and a healthy heart and any proteins that were shared I would compare emPAI values as abnormal values may determine heart failure which were presented into a chart in excel. A few examples of these biomarkers are NADP, Cytochrome BC1 complex and Malate Dehydrogenase. furthermore, during this investigation I was able to find out that Troponin I was an example of a unique biomarker that is detected within heart failure.
I hope you consider my application, thank you for taking the time to read.
