About steffi perathu:

I have always had a passion to help people to the best of my abilities, whether that be in care or in day-to-day life. I would love the opportunity to work in careand be part providing healthcare for many.  It means so much to me that people have access healthcare, and I would treasure being involved in this. I want to help people to the best of my ability and be there during their times of need.

Experience

My previous experience working at Red Kangaroo trampoline park gave me so many skills I can bring forward jobs in care. I was always speaking to the general public, a skill that is essential when working with a support group/youth group. This has given me confidence is speaking to people I have just and I understand the importance of maintaining a professional relationship with clients, which I would often do with regular customers at Red Kangaroo. This job also provided me with leadership skills. In my role as a party host I was in charge of hosting, organising and running many parties for 15-30 children. This required me to be constantly prepared, on-the-ball, and ready to problem-solve should any issues arise, all of which skills I believe are necessary for this job. I know how important it is to be able to think on my feet in a healthcare job, as the situation can change minute to minute, as I feel I have the skills to do this. Additionally, I can listen to and follow instructions carefully both in training and when I get on the shift. I am an eager learner and feel that I can adapt my skills for a role in care. During my time at Red Kangaroo, I learnt the importance of not just thinking about the client, but the client’s family too. For example, if a child is injured my main priority is them but I also know how important it is to communicate with and reassure the family members. This is something I feel is so important working in a caring role as it is not just the patient involved but their loved ones too, and I know that I will give the patients and their relatives the best care I can.

In 2022, I was given the opportunity to go to India for 2 weeks to work with children with mental and physical disabilities in Deepti Rehabilitation Centre. I was so grateful for this opportunity and I was able to witness firsthand some of the daily struggles these patients experience. It filled me with a passion to want to care for others. Specifically, I spent a lot of time with children who had cerebral palsy, and I helped them with activities of daily living such as feeding, wiping saliva and mobility. I found new ways of communicating with these children, though actions and movements, as many children were unable to communicate via speech. I was keen on making sure they felt seen and heard just like any other neurotypical individual and I feel as though this is an important virtue to have in healthcare. This opportunity also gave me the skills to deal with some inconvenient situations and approach difficult conversations with parents and carers of the children. It gave me the skills needed to approach sensitive matters, which might be upsetting for people to hear but are sometimes necessary. Overall I feel that this job gave me the skills to care for patients and treat each patient as an individual. It also helped my strengthen my communication skills, both with figuring out ways to communicate with non-verbal patients and having difficult conversations with family members.
