Theodora Tsiaousi

BSc Biomedical science graduate with experience gained in clinical research, laboratory-based work, and teaching. I would describe myself as a highly organised and an enthusiastic person with a strong background in research experimental design and execution, data analysis and critical evaluation of the literature. I am interested in new challenges and opportunities to work both independently and as part of a team, taking on high levels of responsibility.

My work within NHS laboratories have allowed to me to learn various laboratory techniques used to biologically test different clinical specimens (urines, faeces, swabs, blood cultures, fluids, tissues etc). I have experienced how NHS is operating in line with Infection Prevention Control and Health & Safety guidelines to reduce the risk of contamination when handling potentially infectious samples. Assisting the Microbiology department in maintaining the laboratory instruments, I was responsible in updating the quality control records according to the requirements of Clinical Laboratory Accreditation, (CPA) Ltd and UKAS accreditation.

As part of my studies, I conducted a research project regarding the role of Formylpeptide Receptor (FPR-1) in CML and the therapeutic potential of an FPR-1 antagonist in K562 CML cell line. By critical evaluating and analysing the data from previous clinical trials and studies, my team and I have decided to focus on K562 cell line (isolated from human lymphoblasts from a CML patient). Using all the feedback I received from my supervisor and other experienced colleagues in our meetings, I excelled in my dissertation in which I observed that targeting FPR1 by an FPR1 antagonist could potentially contribute to the treatment of haematological cancers like CML. Ultimately, I have developed my skills in writing lab reports, dissertations, posters and in presenting oral presentations.
