Thomas Dowling

For the last nine years, I have been working on my PhD in Environmental Security (Part-Time), which focuses on environmental security issues in Myanmar and Southeast Asia more widely. While I focused on extreme weather events and deforestation at the local level, my research has been extensive, covering such themes as natural resources, sustainability strategies, climate activism, and new green technologies.

Most of my paid work for the last 15 years has been teaching abroad, generally English, but also History and Geography. This has empowered me with a substantial international portfolio and understanding of different cultures and work practices. I have thusly lived or worked in South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Myanmar, Cambodia, Kuwait, Turkey, Italy, Spain, Norway, Thailand, Canada, Germany, and the United States. I feel such global experience will be of interest to any transnational company.

Aside from the organizational, communicational (verbal, written), and research skills that my teaching career and doctoral work has given me, previous degrees will no doubt find resonance. I hold BA and MA degrees in Ancient History from Bristol University, and a second MA in International Security Studies from Leicester. My thesis was again on Southeast Asia, specifically transnational organized crime (narcotics and piracy) in Thailand, Indonesia, and Singapore. Moreover, I have presented university papers, published work, and been on the news (AL24) twice. 

After 15 years abroad, I am eager to return and build a career in the UK.

Most of my professional experience has been in teaching abroad. This involved extensive preparation, public speaking, and working highly diverse team across Eurasia.

My PhD is in environmental security in Myanmar and Southeast Asian, chiefly pertaining to environmental security issues.
