As we look to attract new talent into the construction industry, we wanted to give an insight into how interesting, varied and rewarding it can be. So, we asked colleagues across Kier to share why they are proud - of what they do, the difference they make, and also, how as a business we are doing what we can to support them. Why work with us?

Diversity & inclusion (D&I) underpin all that we do at Kier, from our values to Performance Excellence. We believe that an inclusive business is a better business and want to develop a culture which encourages people to be themselves to work. Everyone at Kier has a role to play in championing diversity and inclusion to ensure that we are living our values.

The Kier Inclusion Network

The Kier Inclusion Network (KIN) has been established to provide a safe forum where people can be open and honest about inclusion experiences in Kier and drive the diversity agenda in the business.

LGBT and Allies Network

This network was established to support LGBT employees and LGBT family or friends of employees. By creating an inclusive culture and tackling bias - both conscious or unconscious, we ensure that all employees are able to bring their 'whole selves' to work without fear that disclosing their sexual orientation or gender might hinder their career progression. We aim to achieve this through education, support and networking to make Kier a workplace where everyone can thrive.

We have also joined other colleagues within the construction sector to form a group called #BuildingEquality. The group is committed to championing the inclusion of the LGBT community within the industry. As part of the group we are proud to support and attend pride marches across the country, in places like London and Manchester.

Supporting our people with their mental health and wellbeing is extremely important to us, we want to make sure that everyone can feel safe and happy coming in to work.

In any given year one in four people will experience a mental health issue with depression, anxiety or stress related problems being some of the biggest reasons for working days being lost. At Kier we have trained over 330 colleagues to become Mental Health First Aiders that are easily identifiable across the business, they are trained to recognise signs of mental ill health and provide help on a first aid basis.

Our highways division created a campaign called 'Safety in Mind' to promote personal wellbeing and the safety of our workforce. It aims to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health in the workplace. You can watch the full series on our Youtube Channel now.

As part of our vision to be one of the leading construction companies in the UK we take vital steps to ensure that we can be a responsible business and leave positive footprints within our communities.

Our sustainability framework sets out 5 aims for the entire group to achieve:

Pollution Prevention – We have an annual target of zero for avoidable compliance issues. We will restore and replenish environmental areas affected by unavoidable compliance issues.

Responsible Sourcing and Supply Chain – In everything that we do, we will cause no harm to the environment from resources we use.

Carbon Impact – By 2045 we will achieve net zero carbon across our own operations an supply chain.

Zero Waste – By 2030 all of our operations will be free of any single-use plastic, alongside this we also aim to produce no avoidable waste by 2035.

Protection of Habitats and Resources – We will help maintain a healthy environment for our future generations.

Sustainability is at the front of our mind for us all at Kier, every person within the business adopts this mindset and carries out their day-to-day work ensuring that we consider how we can leave a positive impact on the world.

A World of Opportunity

There are over 12,000 of us here at Kier, and we’re always looking for people to join the team. We have over 2,000 genuinely different jobs on offer and the diversity of our business means that there are career opportunities to suit everyone.

Who knows where your career at Kier may take you - keeping Spaghetti Junction open to 60,000 vehicles a day, helping to connect the country with HS2, the UK’s largest infrastructure project outside London, or even preparing the historic Royal Opera House ahead of a gala performance.

Every project we work on draws on the skills and expertise of our people. Their job is to make a positive impact on the world. Because what we achieve together in a day will have benefits that last for generations.

Early Careers - If you’re looking to kick-start your career in the construction industry, then our graduate and apprentice opportunities could be perfect for you.
