Grade K

About the role.
An opportunity has arisen for a Senior Planning Officer within the Spatial Planning team.

We are at an early stage in next review of the Local Plan - following the adoption of Making Spaces for Growing Places, a site allocations plan, in February 2021, which sits under the Joint Core Strategy and Urban Core Plan (adopted in March You will join us as work progresses on this, along with other planning documents and evidence. We have also commenced consultation on a future Plan to 2045 for Gateshead.


You will play a key role in helping to influence and shape our Local Plan documents and development in Gateshead.

You will oversee key aspects of Local Plan policy and evidence, including playing a lead role in progressing the MetroGreen Area Action Plan and employment land evidence.


You must have a high Level of technical competence alongside good negotiation and report writing skills, and with a strong customer focus.

It is essential that you are computer literate with a commitment to, and knowledge and experience of, new digital approaches to Planning.

You must have knowledge and experience of

  • Spatial Planning legislation and plan preparation processes including Local Plan consultation and 4 years experience
  • Preparing/presenting information, including evidence for Local Plan examination
  • Commissioning studies and procurement processes
  • Working on own initiative and as part of a team
  • Monitoring, negotiating, presentations and report writing
  • IT and digital planning skills
  • Supervising members of staff
  • Spatial Planning legislation and procedure including planning reforms and best practice.
  • Monitoring, IT and digital planning
  • Good presentation, negotiation and report writing skills.

You must have the following qualifications.

  • A degree in Town Planning, Geography or equivalent
  • A willingness to undertake any additional corporate training as required.
