Newham MHST is seeking an experienced CBT therapist to work alongside the existing Clinical Leads to manage the clinical leadership of the team and co-develop the MHST offer to school communities as the team expands.


In line with the government's priority to increase access and availability of mental health and wellbeing support for children and young people, the Mental Health Support Team (MHST) is an exciting opportunity to deliver evidence-based early interventions for children and young people, working across both educational settings and healthcare sectors in England.


Mental Health Support Teams will support children and young people, who will be based in and near schools and colleges.

The teams will build on the support already in place from teaching staff, school counsellors, nurses, educational psychologists and the voluntary sector to treat those with mild to moderate mental health issues in school and will help children and young people with more severe needs to access the right support and provide a link to the NHS or alternative suitable support in the Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS), where available.


The role requires the ability to operate with a high degree of professional autonomy but work collaboratively with other members of the MHST and wider network to ensure children young people and their families receive the right support at the right time and in the right place.


To build and maintain the following Key Relationships:

  • MHST colleagues
  • Education staff both Local Authority and Individual sites
  • Specialist School Staff
  • Children, young people and their families
  • General Manager CAMHS
  • CAMHS Senior Management Group
  • Multidisciplinary colleagues in CAMHS
  • Other professionals working with children and young people in social services, health, youth justice system and the voluntary sector
  • Trust corporate departments including Human Resources, Training and Development, IM&T etc.


This is a leadership role with a focus on supporting Mental Health Support Teams with their clinical practice delivering CBT based interventions in and around schools.

The Clinical Lead will be responsible for planning and roll out of schools-based interventions to improve the Mental Health and wellbeing of pupils, staff and parents.

This includes managing the training and development needs of the team and working in partnership with other community and voluntary sector organisations to provide a programme of mental health support to local schools.


This role will foster a culture that encourages and enables individuals to have an active role in identifying, planning and meeting their individual needs, ensuring that the experience of the CYP / family using the service is at the centre of any decision making.

Finally, the post holder will also deliver high quality assessments, interventions and consultation within the education system where appropriate.


This post is suitable for a Psychologist, CBT Therapist, or other discipline who have post-qualification experience or training in CBT, who is interested in and passionate about providing high quality leadership and services for young people who require emotional support in school settings, and who enjoys managing staff well-being and supporting people to achieve their potential.


This role requires a high level of skill in training, developing relationships with school leaders, risk management, safeguarding and liaison with other agencies, both professional and voluntary.
