Our family centred, 54 bedded acute general paediatric unit has a progressive forward thinking multi-disciplinary team, caring for children and families with a wide range of conditions including general medicine & surgery, oncology, ENT, ophthalmology, maxillo-facial, orthopaedic, and those requiring high dependency nursing care.

JOB SUMMARY
To deputise and support the ward manager in achieving the Directorate's aims and objectives. To take charge regularly of the clinical area in the absence of the ward manager.


To take responsibility for the assessments of the care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of care without supervision and to supervise and teach other nursing and non-nursing staff, acting as a clinical role model.


OBJECTIVES AND PURPOSE OF THE POST:
Clinical responsibilities

  • To be responsible for assessing and developing individual programmes of care in conjunction with the ward team
  • To assist in setting standards, objectives and priorities in span of care
  • To be responsible for implementing and evaluating nursing care programmes and ensuring a high standard of service for patients and their families or carers
  • Working closely with the ward manager, develop and implement clinical audit and effective programmes for all staff working in the department/ward
Managerial responsibilities

  • To take charge regularly in the absence of the person with continuing responsibility and participate in the Directorate's bleep holder rota and undertake the responsibilities associated with this role
  • To provide supervision, mentorship and support to nursing staff working within the department/ward
  • To participate in planning the duty rota maintaining a flexible approach to ensure ward cover
  • To assist the department/ward manager in department budgeting and to be economic in the use of ward stocks and clinical requisitions, avoiding waste wherever possible
  • To investigate patient complains, accident and incident reporting and take corrective actions to prevent recurrence
  • Monitoring sickness absence levels
  • To participate in selection and interviewing of staff at Band 5 and below
  • To be actively involved in promoting good communication channels across the multi-disciplinary team.
Education, training and development

  • To ensure the procedures for extending the role of the nurse and scope of professional practice are implemented and revised regularly
  • To contribute to the ward learning environment through teaching and by example
  • To act as mentor to the nurses with particular attention to monitoring and continuous assessment of students, creating an atmosphere conductive to learning for all staff
  • To undertake appropriate activities to update clinical knowledge and skills.
Professional and Legal responsibilities

  • To be conversant with policies and procedures relating to Fire and Health and Safety
  • To report all accidents and complaints in accordance with agreed policies and assist in investigations of complaints and accidents as required
  • To uphold the principles of the NMC Code of Professional Conduct
  • To be conversant with department/ward's Policies and Procedures.
