Job Introduction

This role sits in Network Rail Design Delivery (NRDD), part of Engineering Services which is a business unit of Route Services.

Route Services is a business area that has been created to provide services to the routes in the safest, most cost-efficient, and effective way, enabling them to benefit from economies of scale and optimised national resources.


Network Rail Design Delivery (NRDD) provide a managed service for design delivery through a regionally focused national multi-disciplinary organisation utilising relationships with supply chain design organisations.

NRDD bring a range of different specialist design and engineering activities including Signalling, E&P, LV, B&C and Track Design that complement each other to add value and improve the overall diverse service offering.

Main Responsibilities

Chair signal sighting activities for new works in the territory, having responsibility for the correct positioning of all signals in the territory.


  • Specify work relating to signal sighting in order to deliver the Signalling Renewals Portfolio for the Territory.
  • Convene signal sighting committee meetings as required in connection with signal major and minor works schemes. Where not directly chairing the signal sighting committee, must approve the appointment of a suitable Signal Sighting Chairperson.
  • Plan, direct and undertake signal sighting inspections and assessments in compliance with Railway Group and Network Rail's company standards and procedures.
  • Review standards relating to signal sighting. Identify the necessary actions for complying with new or revised standards & implement on the territory. Challenge standards to confirm whether technical and procedural content is reasonably practical and efficient and recommend changes. Identify and recommend noncompliance for individual projects & submit to Engineering.
  • Check whether the production, monitoring and signoff of signal sighting forms is carried out appropriately and that appropriate signal sighting records are maintained.
  • Monitor compliance with relevant competence standards, particularly in respect of projects and minor works activities, and address any shortcomings.
  • Provide professional technical support to inquiries, Operational Risk Reduction and Mitigation (OPSRAM) meetings and major projects.
  • Identify opportunities for innovation to improve signal sighting.

Essential

  • Working towards an HNC/HND or equivalent industryrecognised qualification
  • Ten years' relevant experience in signalling scheme design or sighting.
  • Holder of Sentinel Signal Sighting Competency as Committee Chair
Desirable

  • Foundation degree in engineering
  • Incorporated engineer
  • Signalling Maintenance or Works Testing Handbook qualification
