Job overview

We are looking for a motivated and dynamic Speech and Language Therapist who is keen to join the acute paediatric SLT team at Nottingham Children's hospital.

This team works across a range of specialities including Neurosciences, ENT, Oncology and Critical Care.

There are now 3 SLTs in the team and as the fourth team member we want you to bring your knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm to help us develop our service further, particularly with an interest in children living with long term ventilation needs and also children under ENT.

The opportunities include working on wards, in Consultant-led clinics and outpatients.

You will be a specialist in your own clinical field and provide clinical leadership to the SLT team, working closely with the existing Clinical Specialist.

There is strong support from the well-established MDT teams, key Consultants and AHP leads, and the nurse specialists.

There is support and training available where needed and access to peer supervision and mutual mentoring with the adult SLT service.

This service is evolving and growing and we are developing our national collaborations. We are looking for an individual who wants to help us grow and develop this service.

Part-time and flexibility around working patterns would be considered.

Main duties of the job

You would join a growing a specialist Speech and Language Therapy team responsible for the provision of a Speech and Language Therapy service to the Nottingham Children's Hospital.

This involves the assessment, differential diagnosis and management of communication and feeding problems of paediatric inpatients, across the age range within Paediatrics, with a wide range of complex medical conditions.

You will be based at Queen's Medical Centre with opportunities to work on paediatric Critical Care through to ward level, providing early intervention and multi-disciplinary intensive paediatric assessment and management.

There are opportunities for clinic and outpatient work.

In addition to the clinical work the role also includes inter-disciplinary teaching and training of patients, families, and other professionals, and supporting less experienced staff in the team.

The post-holder will work with the Clinical Specialist to scope out future developments for the SLT role within the Childrens Hospital.

Working for our organisation

The paediatric SLT service is part of Nottingham Children's Hospital SLT service, part of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH).

NUH is one of the biggest and busiest acute teaching trusts in Europe. It delivers an exceptional range of care, teaching, and research including many tertiary and regional services.

The post-holder will work closely with established multi-professional teams within the Nottingham Children's Hospital and with the broader SLT service.

There is also a Band 8a SLT for the Neonatal Unit and a Band 8a Clinical Specialist SLT for acute paediatrics, and the post holder will work closely with these and the operational lead.

There is committed support from the operational lead SLT, from the Operational Head of Therapies, and the Therapy & Rehab Services General Manager.

There is peer supervision with the other Band 8a SLTs.
