Detailed job description and main responsibilities:

  • Physician Associate will be an integral part of our renal inpatient team providing support with admissions, inpatients directly under the care of the renal team (dialysis and transplant) and other dialysis patients within the hospital
  • They will work closely with the dialysis supporting the medical care of dialysis patients across the hospital and liaising with our outpatient dialysis team
  • To be able to establish differential diagnosis, making appropriate treatment plans and initiate treatment, escalating as appropriate.
  • Record the history and physical condition and ensure accurate and comprehensive medical records are maintained using appropriate written and electronic documentation according to Trust guidelines.
  • To be actively involved in patient care, liaising with ward staff and other members of the clinical team as required
  • Initiation of Immediate Life Support in patients
  • To be able to priorities caseload of patients with a range of complex illness and needing different treatment.
  • To treat patients and their family member using a high degree of empathy and advanced communication skills.
  • To review patients for discharge and prepare appropriate documentation of their admission and inpatient stay for the GP.
  • To participate in multidisciplinary team meetings
  • To carry out procedures which will include ECG, Venepuncture, IV cannulation, Arterial Blood Gas sampling and analysis, Urinary Catheterisation, Suturing, NG Tube Placement
  • Keen to develop specialist knowledge and experience, particularly within the field of haemodialysis, and acting as a resource and support for the new and rotating doctors and allied health professionals. Educational opportunities will be available to support this.
  • To be willing to develop competency in advance clinical procedure skills.
  • To ensure confidentiality at all times and act in accordance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act.
  • Teaching other groups of staff, e.g. nursing, medical & PA students
  • To be accountable for their clinical responsibilities and comply with the Department of Health & UK Managed Voluntary Register for Physician Associates Fitness to Practice and Code of Conduct standard.
  • Maintain a professional behaviour at all times and promote a positive image of Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust at all times, in line with World Class Care values.
  • To actively participate in the development of relevant evidence based clinical guidelines/policies relating to speciality.
  • To improve and maintain an excellent patient experience.
  • To establish effective working relations with all members of the multidisciplinary team to promote good communication and a multidisciplinary approach to patient care. To participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting.
  • Out of hours work may be included within this post, up to 8 weekends per year, with appropriate remuneration.

Person specification:


Education & Professional Qualifications:


Essential criteria:


  • Postgraduate Diploma/ Master's in physician Associate (formally Physician Assistant) from an accredited UK University
  • Bachelor's degree in Life science/ Biomedical/ Nursing or Allied Health Science
  • Member of Physician Associate Managed Voluntary Register (PAMVR)
  • Valid national certification and recertification every six years as stipulated by PAMVR
