The Role


A unique and exciting opportunity is available for an experienced manager to work across the two Schools of Computing and Mathematics, Statistics & Physics over the next 2 years.

The two schools are key to the successful delivery of the Digital SAgE strategy.

Having already appointed to the Head of School Operations role, we are now looking to appoint to the Deputy role to work across both units in supporting the development, implementation, and delivery of opportunities.

The role will work in partnership with the Head of School Operations and new Implementation Manager.

As Deputy Head of Operations, the post holder will also work across the two School Executive Boards and work in partnership with both Heads of School, members of the professional services teams and wider schools.


This is a G level fixed term post for 2 years and will be offered on a secondment basis to colleagues at F level or above with experience in a manager role in a research-intensive academic unit.

Key Accountabilities

  • To support the Head of Operations in leading, contributing and participating in the development of the schools strategic and operational planning processes, to support the strategic direction of the Schools, Faculty and University. The post holder will also be expected to support in responding to opportunities and challenges that might affect the strategic and operational plans and to support in the forward planning of the business cycle of the schools.
  • To lead on specific projects in either school as identified by the Head of School Operations and/or the Heads or School or School Executive Boards. A flexible and agile approach will be required to support this area along with a working knowledge of all aspects of the business. The above will include managing strategic reviews and a dynamic programme of projects in support of strategic plans as required. To ensure projects are managed and delivered to time and budget. This will include the need for internal and external horizon scanning, identification and analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats and the identification and oversight of the management of risks.
  • Working with the Head of School Operations, ensure that the administrative structures in and across the schools are appropriate and effective. Overall leadership for the operational functions across both schools. To develop a culture and environment of collegiate partnership with academic colleagues to ensure that the schools meet their individual and collective academic objectives and to minimise the need for academic colleagues to undertake administrative or support tasks.
  • To hold senior administrative responsibility for effective induction and onboarding of new colleagues across both schools, working closely with the Implementation Manager and Operations Managers to develop a high quality and effective programme. The role will also involve working closely with above colleagues and People Services to ensure delivery of an efficient staff recruitment and selection process.
  • To oversee internal and external communications. The role will involve liaising closely with the Faculty Marketing and Communications Team and Central Units ensuring effective communications and outreach initiatives to promote our reputation and celebrate success across both schools.
  • To support the Business, Engagement & Skills strategies within the Schools, working closely with the NuSolve Manager to support in developing emerging and existing links, the development of academic initiatives and working effectively in partnership with key colleagues in the Schools, Faculty, University as well as external contacts.
  • To oversee the development of strategic Infrastructure plans working closely with the two Operation's Managers, Deputy Heads of School, Faculty Estates Manager and Dean of Strategic Projects on the development of detailed 5year space and facilities plans with a 10year horizon outline projection for both schools to feed into the Faculty and University's Estate Strategic Plan.
