The opportunity is for an architectural design lead position at associate director grade to join Mace's Local Government and Communities team with a particular focus on Hampshire County Council (HCC).

To be part of our Winchester Office's multi-disciplinary delivery team and will be involved in its future direction and growth.

Mace has a unique long-term partnership with HCC, supporting the delivery of HCC's strategic aims through their award-winning property services group.

Mace provides programme and project management, cost consultancy, technical advisors, architects, engineers, designers and building surveyors.


You'll be responsible for:

  • Inspiring a multidisciplinary local design team, as an architect.
  • Delivering service and design excellence to HCC and other local clients, through leadership of the architectural team.
  • Acting as Winchester office's architectural lead in Mace's national design discussions.
  • Managing, influencing and negotiating with key senior stakeholders. Working collaboratively towards the common goal of net zero carbon transition and share responsibility for the proactive identification and management of the associated carbon emissions and reductions during the delivery of work.
  • Quality assurance of architectural design outputs for team.
  • Providing strategic advice to senior leadership on design matters.
  • Knowledge leadershipMentoring and developing others. Responsible for the development and delivery of training including training materials where required.
  • Team wellbeing.
  • Delivering delegated elements of an annual business plan, a programme or portfolio of projects. Alongside architectural team leadership, develop resource and fee proposals.
  • Making clear recommendations for action to drive continuous improvement, mitigate risk and improve effectiveness.
  • Supporting business development activities including bidding.
  • Managing the monitoring of performance of supply chain. Partner collaboratively with multiple internal and external stakeholders.

You'll also have:

  • Extensive multiple sector experience in leading or supporting large architecturally led design frameworks delivering design and design management on different building typologies.
  • A good technical knowledge of buildings systems and technologies along with good working knowledge the design process for all disciplines with a focus on innovation, sustainability but also, importantly, health and safety.
  • An understanding of public sector frameworks and can build lasting client relationships and lead strong, motivated teams.
  • Experience in a design and project management consultancy environment and an appetite to explore, be hungry to grow your career and enjoy the opportunities Mace has to offer.
  • A degree in an appropriate design field, are digitally savvy, can build lasting client relationships and lead strong, motivated teams.
  • Relevant membership of a professional body.
  • Strong communication skills. Articulate and open and comfortable when representing Mace and our clients in a public forum.
  • Knowledge of how carbon and sustainability considerations will shape the outlook of the projects you are working on.
