About the role:

We are currently looking for a Materials Controller to join our TrainCare Centre (TCC) team.

You'll be responsible for ensuring all materials are offloaded, received, inspected, and stored correctly within our TCC and any returnable materials are recovered and controlled in accordance with stores procedures.


You'll report into the Depot Stores Controller and manage the performance of our suppliers, through monitoring and target setting to ensure material requirements can be met.

As well as monitoring the team rosters, annual leave and sickness vacancies and ensure sufficient cover arrangements are always in place.

Key responsibilities:


  • This is a varied and challenging role, but here is a taste of what your daytoday activities could include:
  • Supporting the management of stock control systems, to monitor usage and support the strategic development of stock control methods and procedures
  • You'll be assisting with the regular stock check processes.
  • Monitor and review surplus stock and redundant assets, and arrange disposal within delegated authorities
  • Responsibility for the day to day control of materials deliveries, goods inspections, rejections, correct storage and the optimisation of storage space
  • You'll support the management risk associated with material supply to ensure minimum levels are maintained e.g. COSHH, Engineering competence etc.
  • Undertaking training and competence to operate all stores associated plant and equipment
  • You'll be the 'Key User' for our SAP stock control system

About you:

We are looking for someone with a keen eye for attention to detail, ensuring the quality and integrity of the information being recorded and the ability to prioritise and manage your own time, because we need someone who can start helping the team as soon as they join us


You'll need to have excellent organisation skills in order to control your workload and break it into manageable tasks, ensuring you are able to hit deadlines and targets.

If you fancy doing your thing as a Materials Controller, your greatest strengths will be:

  • Excellent communicator
  • both written and verbal as you'll be working with a variety of internal and external stakeholders
  • The ability to prioritise and be adaptable when things can change as well as managing your day to day workload
  • Showing initiative where necessary, whilst continuing to adhere to our working policies
  • Confidence to build relationships with a wide variety of people and teams
  • Confident with IT and the ability to learn new programmes
  • Good knowledge and experience of material supply procedures and storekeeping practices is desirable.
  • Experience of our trains and rolling stock would be an advantage.
