Job Advert:

***Mencap's online community is a safe and supportive place to ask questions about learning disability, share experiences and offer support. Parents, siblings, friends and people with a learning disability use the community and we are looking for a volunteer to help our digital team welcome people to the community and reply to posts.

You do not need to be a learning disability expert; it is more about making people feel listened to.

You will not need to moderate the community, but you should flag any posts that worry you to your volunteer manager.

We want you to make people on our online community feel welcome and cared about, so a friendly attitude and willingness to listen is essential

When do I need to be available?

You would be based at home, and spend one to two hours a week supporting the online community. You could do these hours at a time that suits you. You will have regular catch ups with the community administrator, taking place during office hours. You would need to commit to doing the role for 6 months.

What skills do I need?

  • An interest in other people and a willingness to listen
  • Able to write in a friendly way that is easy to understand
  • Accepting of others who might have different views than yourself
  • Confident using IT
  • Experience in a similar type of role is desired, but not required
  • You don't need to know a lot about learning disability, but you should have some interest in disability, caring or similar.
