Job description:


As Head of Product Management, you will be responsible for leading, developing and supporting the Product Manager community of practice.


There will be a focus on building capability, knowledge, talent and expertise within the profession through thought-leadership, knowledge sharing, collaborative ways of working, common working practices and championing a culture of excellence.


Day to day, you'll work closely with fellow heads of profession, senior stakeholders and the DfE product manager community to ensure that product managers have what they need to thrive in their roles.

Person specification:

You will be a recognised expert in product management.

You will have a proven track record of identifying, testing and championing the adoption of emerging technologies, techniques and practices within your professional domain, advising digital teams on the art of the possible and examples of innovative thinking.

As Head of Product Management, you will:

  • Set direction and strategy for the product management profession in line with DfE objectives.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure the vision for the profession aligns to Departmental needs.
  • Support recruitment of and professionally lead a diverse team of product managers and support their ongoing professional development, including coaching and mentoring.
  • Create and own the strategic plan for the development of the people in the profession, delivering a prioritised roadmap that builds and strengthens the professional capability and expertise for your community of practice.
  • Promote and advocate for a usercentred approach with senior stakeholders, ensuring user needs are balanced with business goals across the Department's services.
  • Provide product management expertise and consultancy to portfolios, providing handson support as required.
  • Lead, support and contribute to the internal and crossgovernment product management communities to enable knowledge sharing, peer support and innovation.
  • Measure and monitor the products and services we develop, regularly reviewing to validate their effectiveness.
  • Working with your technical leads to ensure products and services are flexible, loosely coupled and deliver appropriate performance.
  • Collaborate with CDDO to standardise and strengthen DDaT professions.
  • Ensure that all members of the community have a voice and can contribute towards continually improving the profession and building a thriving, diverse and inclusive community.
