  • If you enjoy a varied role working outdoors in a busy environment then this is the role for you. You will play a key role in making sure our visitors have a safe and enjoyable visit by maintaining facilities and supporting events. You will mainly be focused on our visitor offer but you will be working with the team to support the whole recreation offer.

Job description:


West England Forest District is responsible for the sustainable management of over 36,500ha of the nation's forests in the west and south-west of England.

The District extends from the Shropshire Hills AONB south to the majestic oak and beech woods of Savernake Forest in Wiltshire and south-west to Idless Woods near Truro in Cornwall.

The District is managed from the District Office at Coleford, in the Forest of Dean, with a secondary office at Haldon Forest Park near Exeter, supported by ten remotely located forest beat teams and three recreation hub teams that look after the forests and woods on a day to day basis.

The post is based at Cardinham Woods near Bodmin in Cornwall. Cardinham receives nearly 250,000 visitors per year who come to enjoy the forest environment and recreation facilities available.

The local team consists of 2 recreation rangers and 2 visitor services staff who work cohesively to deliver high quality experiences and facilities that are safe and enjoyable.

Facilities include a network of walking and cycling trails, play, café, and toilets, making for a very popular destination.


Working as part of a seven-day roster, across the working week including regular weekends, public holidays and out-of-hours events, the post holder will support the forest centre to ensure visitors receive a high-quality experience and that the facilities remain fit for purpose and safe.

Key work areas

Ensure high standards of customer service at all times.


Provide face to face customer service at the information point selling trail maps, activity packs and Forestry England Membership as well as providing advice and information to visitors adding value to the visitors' experience.

Ensure that the regular daily/weekly/monthly visitor service inspection checks are completed on time and to a high standard.

Carry out routine facilities checks with a keen eye for detail ensuring all facilities maintained to a high quality.

Regular litter picking and bin emptying to ensure the site is welcoming and safe.

Support the Ranger team carrying out a range of practical tasks.

Help contribute to the management of Cardinham Woods' social media channels and website engaging with our visitors.

Keep onsite marketing up to date and relevant to support the business of the forest centre and wider organisation.

Maintain good relationships with on-site businesses including the Café, and learning provider.

Use a range of Forestry England bespoke software to record relevant information.

Support the recreation team on event delivery by both Forestry England and third parties, assisting where necessary.


Person specification:


Essential:


  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent team working skills
  • Previous experience in a customer facing role delivering quality services to a diverse customer base
  • Competence with IT such as MS Office and using social media
  • Experience in working in a busy outdoor setting

Desirable:


  • Background in practical facility maintenance
  • A good understanding of relevant health and safety best practice
