An exciting opportunity has arisen in the SIHMDS Department at Hammersmith Hospital for an experienced Senior Associate Practitioner/ Genetic Technologist to join the Cytogenetics team.

The post will focus on delivering a high quality laboratory diagnostic service.

Applicants must have a biological science degree, with practical laboratory experience in genetics and be able to demonstrate a keen interest in service development and laboratory diagnostic genetics.


The successful applicant will work as part of a laboratory team undertaking a broad range of scientific and technical duties covering a wide range of cytogenetic techniques under the supervision of senior scientific staff.

This post will involve direct line management, supervision and training of staff and management of all necessary resources for the day to day functioning of the wet laboratory in Cytogenetics They will also be responsible for contributing to the daily rota dependant on staffing.


To undertake the technical and scientific duties and responsibilities required to participate in and to support the clinical scientists in the provision of an effective and high quality Oncology Cytogenetics service to patients.

This includes primary FISH analysis and report writing.


To be responsible for the day-to-day supervision of the technical team including workload, absence cover, production of rotas where required, to cover all areas of technical work.

This will be under the overall direction of the section heads.


To be proactive in service improvement from a technical perspective and ensuring that all procedures are carried out effectively to ensure high quality results.

They will collaborate with other members of the section, department or hospital in all matters necessary to achieve maximum efficiency of the service.

This role involves daily exposure to body fluids and hazardous chemicals.


To contribute to the training of all staff where appropriate and undertake continuing professional development including being eligible for, or actively working towards, registration with the Academy for Healthcare Science as a Genetic Technologist.
