Salary:
£21 PH PAYE - £27.00 Umbrella

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB:


To be responsible for dealing with discretionary requests, adjudicate on fraudulent cases and deal with all claims in the Disputes process from internal review through to the preparation and presentation of cases to the appeals tribunal.


  • To maintain a specialist knowledge of legislation, case law and the schemes policies and procedures of the client relating the administration of Housing Benefit / Tax Benefit claims.
  • To carry out internal reviews, providing explanations of cases where the claimant has made such a request advising the customer of the outcome by letter or phone.
  • To prepare cases in writing and present them orally to the Appeals Tribunal where the appellant may have legal representation. To give evidence at court where required.
  • To refer cases to and adjudicate on recommendation from the investigation team as to whether a fraudulent Benefit has been made and to liaise with the DSS on fraudulent cases referred to them.
  • To make revision decisions in cases where the customer is disputing the award /non award of a discretionary payment.
  • Interview / negotiate with claimants and their advisors to obtain further information needed to determine a claim, resolve an appeal, revision or complaint or explain entitlement.


The role includes investigating and replying to complaints, the Ombudsman, Councillors, MPs, Solicitors, Voluntary bodies, and other enquiries from customers' representatives relating to Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction and Discretionary Housing Payments claims.

You must have specialist knowledge and a clear understanding of Discretionary Housing Payments, Housing and Council Tax Benefits regulations. Experience in preparing and/or presenting at Housing Benefit / Appeal Tribunals, Valuation Tribunals. There will be a requirement to present face to face at Appeal tribunal locations when requested.

You must be able to manage your own workload and ensure you are effective in balancing priorities. You will be dealing with a high workload.
