Job description
Volunteer Tutors Organisation (VTO) is a Glasgow based charity which provides free educational support to children and young people.

This is delivered through one-to-one tutoring by trained volunteers both in person and online and through Learning Hubs which are held in primary schools or community venues.

We have begun expanding our services into the Perth & Kinross area and are now looking to recruit staff to coordinate our service delivery there.

Salary is £24,788 and the role is full time, 35 hours per week.

Hours will generally be 9-5 Monday to Friday, but you will need to be flexible to meet the needs of families and tutors so occasional evening work will be required.

We operate an Overtime/TOIL policy for additional hours worked.

20 days holiday and 11 days public holiday. Our staff have access to a company laptop and mobile phone.

You will have access to office space in Perth city centre hosted by one of our partners but will be able to work flexibly from home when required.


Responsibilities


VTO will be supporting Care Experienced young people in the local authority area of Perth and Kinross with one-to-one tutor support delivered by trained volunteers.

The target focus will be on young people looked after at home.

This will be achieved through the appointment of a dedicated VTO Outreach Coordinator who will be responsible for the matching and pairing of suitable volunteer tutors with their young people and the ongoing support of the entire tutoring journey.

The approach will be relationship based which has proven to be key in the success of the tutoring and outcomes.


The new role of Outreach Coordinator will be responsible for managing the relationships between VTO, the young people who are referred to us, their families, schools, social work, and any other 3rd sector organisations engaged in the support of the young person.

They will provide structured support to enable volunteer tutors to work effectively with the children and young people who have been referred to our 1-1 online or in person tutoring programmes.

This will involve meeting tutors and families in person or via Zoom or Teams and undertaking home or community venue visits if the tutoring is to be face-face.

You will also interview volunteer tutors either F2F or online and support them throughout their time with VTO.


Learning Hubs support groups of up to 10 children with their homework and overall literacy/numeracy competencies, improving confidence levels and motivation to learn.

As we establish these hubs, you will be on-site at each Learning Hub for approx. 1.5 hours each delivery day with planning/resourcing time additional to this.


Principal Accountabilities

  • Relationship management and development of key stakeholders as relevant for the effective delivery of VTO services. This includes the support of kinship or otherwise care experienced young people and their families.
  • Liaise with schools and other partners to identify and support pupils' needs and ensure alignment of VTO objectives.
  • Matching and pairing volunteer tutors with referred pupils, online or faceface.
  • Provide advice, support, and resources to volunteer tutors supporting our 11 and Learning Hubs services.
  • Support the Volunteer Engagement and Training Coordinator in the organisation, development and delivery of the recruitment and training of volunteer tutors and Senior Pupils from local High Schools who will support our Learning Hubs.
  • Initiate, monitor, and respond to progress reports and other ongoing service supervision, focusing on the monitoring and evaluation of whole service area delivery in the Perth & Kinross area.
  • The delivery and management of an allocated number of Learning Hubs
  • As an integral component of the support of the Learning Hubs, the implementation and management of the VTO Senior Pupil Leadership Programme.
  • Any other duties as directed by the Operations Manager. Key internal relationships will be with the Senior LCCs, as well as our Volunteer Engagement and Training Coordinator, Business Development Officer, and Operations Manager.

Person Specification

  • Experience of working with young people from care experienced backgrounds
  • Experience of working in partnership with other organisations to provide joined up support to children and young people and their families.
  • Knowledge of the education system, safeguarding issues and identifying barriers to learning.
  • Awareness of issues including ASN, mental health issues and the specific needs of care experienced children and young people which affects their interaction with education.
