The Payments Consulting Group is a team of highly trained professional consultants within Global Strategy & Capabilities (GS&C). American Express depends on the Payments Consultant team to manage payment processing relationships with managed Merchants and Partners.


Payments Consultants enable card acceptance, identify and implement products, provide technical servicing expertise and champion the voice of the customer to internal teams.


Team members must maintain deep and current knowledge about the payments industry, market trends, new and existing technologies, products and services, and the structure of American Express and customer organizations.


How will you make an impact in this role?


Provide consultative and product enablement support to UK Merchants, the American Express UK Merchant Acquisition and Client Management Teams, external partners such as third party processors, Point Of Sale Terminal vendors, internal Account Management and Product teams.


  • Provide product and process consultancy
  • Lead and track projects (Authorizations, Submissions, Settlement, Reconciliation and Disputes enablement)
  • Project Manage technology enhancement to existing infrastructure in partnership with internal American Express Technologies teams, Network teams and Product Development
  • Build and manage relationships across the organization, working closely with Client Management and Merchant Acquisition to support the business and its growth
  • Stay informed on payment industry developments and how they may impact American Express acceptance and/or inform
  • Business strategy
  • Network, build and manage effective relationship with external partners
Develop and maintain an in-depth understanding of the Merchant

  • Know all aspects of merchant's payment acquiring environment including history, current goals and organizational drivers.
  • Bring voice of the Customer information to the American Express Blue Box regarding capability and product opportunities.
  • Drive troubleshooting and remediation of complex merchant payment processing issues.
  • Liaise and lead internal business partners on delivery of technical solutions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of card payment authorizations, submissions, reconciliation and disputes processes across the full range of payment acquiring scenarios and merchant industries.
  • Being able to establish and develop strong working relationships across internal and external partners and customers
  • Proven track record in leading complex projects and driving results.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (written, verbal and presentations)
  • Articulating technically complex issues in a simple nontechnical manner.
  • Strong consultative sales skills to support the Merchant Acquisition team.
  • Highly organized and results driven, with strong ability to be forward thinking and proactive.
  • Flexibility to work across time zones with groups across Europe, in the U.S. and other international locations (where necessary)
  • Ability to travel at times within the UK or across Europe (less than 10%)
