Building Services Assistant


Salary/Grade:
£21,343 (£9147 to £12,196 pro rata)


Responsible to:
Facilities Manager


Hours: 15-20 Hours per week;

- regular times 6:30am -10:30am, to be agreed on appointment.

This job description is a guide to the work you will initially be required to undertake. It may be changed from time to time to meet changing circumstances. It does not form part of your Contract of Employment.


1. Purpose of Post
The provision of flexible, responsive cleaning and portering service to staff, students, officers, and customers in the Union. The role is varied, and the post requires flexibility and adaptability.


2. Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To undertake cleaning duties to ensure a clean and hygienic building for use by staff, students', officers, and members of the public.
  • To provide minor maintenance duties throughout the Union, including but not restricted to replenishing janitorial supplies, and clearing notice boards.
  • To clear refuse and to sweep the perimeter of the building.
  • To use the compactor and to take responsibility for all recycling and the recycling area which includes glass, paper, and general waste.
  • To prepare rooms for meetings and other functions including setting up furniture as directed and in accordance with room booking forms and requirements and to assist in the reconfiguration of rooms.
  • To ensure that the premises are safe. To rectify and report any hazards, including keeping the fire exits clear.
  • To assist with cleaning schedules as required and toilet check sheets.
  • To take part in crossdepartmental working teams as required to meet organisational objectives.

2 Experience
2.1 Experience of working in an Educational or similar D I environment

2.2 Previous experience cleaning using a variety of methods D A/I


3 Knowledge
3.1 Health and Safety legislation particularly regarding COSHH D A/I regulations and procedures


4 Skills & Attributes
4.1 Ability to work independently at times without supervision E A/I

4.2 Able to demonstrate excellent customer services E A/I

4.3 Reliable, with good timekeeping and attention to detail E I

4.4 Ability to work as part of a team E I

4.5 Ability to undertake physical tasks that may involve bending, E A/I stretching, and lifting
