Sharpsmart have been awarded new services that require regular on-site presence to support the ongoing delivery and improvement of healthcare waste management practices.

Our focus is to support the NHS in achieving their objectives to reduce CO2e produced by healthcare waste treatment and improve compliance and safety.

We have an opportunity for a

Waste Monitoring Officer to join our Commercial team; based in North London and Hertfordshire region, this role will provide support to the Sharpsmart contract management team and our NHS partners; through understanding how our customers work within their facilities we can help with the identification and implementation of improvement projects and solutions. This role will be the heart of what Sharpsmart focus is with our customers and will support the team through delivering improvements day in day out.


Your Role will Include:


  • Identify initiatives that reduce single use plastic disposal, divert waste away from unnecessary overtreatment, supporting customers in finding more sustainable recycling outlets for waste items
  • Provide innovative ways to improve the patient environment to make it safer and cleaner, raising awareness through training and education to support the improvement of compliance and results.
  • General consultancy to help customer agree on what solutions really do get them in a position where they are moving forward and exceeding their goals
  • Provide regular trends reviews and audits across clinical and nonclinical departments within the healthcare environment focusing on compliance
  • Provide support and training to department staff using the findings of the audits
  • Comply with all waste relevant regulations and devise and help implement programs to increase recycling and offensive percentages whilst looking to reduce waste volumes and reuse to improve the performance of waste vs the waste hierarchy
  • Responsible for the liaison of trust subcontractors and their contractors ensure levels of waste collection services are acceptable.
  • Comply with statutory, health & safety policies and governance

Skills and Experience Required:


  • Able to manage your own time autonomously and have the drive to make positive changes that consider the wider audience
  • Experience in building strong stakeholder relationships across the NHS environment; including clinical staff, infection control, sustainability, waste management, transformation, procurement (Advantageous)
  • Driving change within a healthcare setting would be beneficial to the role
  • Strong communication and influencing skills
  • Understanding of all Microsoft Packages
  • Intermediate use of Excel and PowerPoint and CRM system (Salesforce)
  • Waste Management experience or knowledge of HTM 0701 advantageous
  • Full clean driving licence and willingness to travel
  • Enhanced DBS
