Band 6 Paediatric Critical Care Practice Educator

0.5wte - up to 18.75hrs/week


This is an interesting and exciting opportunity for an experienced PICU nurse with an interest/experience in education to join the PICU education team as a Practice Educator.


You will be responsible for:


  • Creating and promoting a learning environment that optimises nurses' clinical development and facilitates a bestpractice approach to evidencebased patient care.
  • Clinical education and support to the nursing team (registered and nonregistered) within PICU. This may be Unit / Ward based or classroom based education.
  • Developing knowledge and evidenced based practice across PIC.
  • Promoting & ensuring clinical competency sign off for PIC nursing staff.
  • Where appropriate, contributing to education within the Division of Women & Children's Services as required e.g. Through Faculty of Children's Nurse Education, BRHC Clinical Orientation Programme, Patient Safety Update.
Applicants are expected to hold a Paediatric Critical Care course certificate.

  • From a clinical, educational and professional perspective, guide and direct all PIC nursing staff to ensure each individual's full potential is reached
  • Provide clinical skills, educational support and direction to new and existing staff and learners to enable the ongoing delivery of high quality care to the children and their families
  • Through working with new staff directly link theory to practice within the clinical setting, and ensure accurate assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care delivery
  • Act as a knowledge resource for members of the multidisciplinary team on a day to day basis
  • Support others in developing and updating clinical guidelines for multidisciplinary use.
  • Act as a role model clinically by ensuring own practice is of a high standard
  • Take a leading role in introducing and supporting nursing developments within the service, together with enhancing evidence based practice
  • Liaise and work collaboratively with all members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure a high standard of care is maintained
  • To ensure in conjunction with the link nurses and sisters, that all staff are trained to use medical equipment safely and for the purpose for which it was intended.
  • Develop educational links with other centres within the South West Region supporting their practice in caring for children with or undergoing medical care.
  • Maintaining and developing Paediatric Intensive Care skills of the nurses "upskilled" from other areas
