The Harbour Master, also known as an Asset Manager (Marine), role plays a pivotal part in the day-to-day management of the Marine teams and Statutory Functions at the Ports of Tilbury and Tilbury 2, as well as liaising closely with the Port of London Authority (PLA) for Cruise, RoRo, and Bulk and Container river berths.

Your role will include working with other Tilbury Asset Managers, PLA and 3rd Parties to plan, implement and control the safe and efficient movement of all vessels primarily within the ports which are under the remit of the SHA.

You will also be responsible for ensuring that all shipping movements are carried out safely and in line with legislation and Company policy.

Due to the nature of this role, demonstratable people management skills and experience is essential.

About the role:


Your responsibilities will include:


  • Managing and delegating work to ensure the smooth running of the Marine teams in the port
  • Working with the PLA and the Duty Harbour Master, to ensure that proposed vessel locations and arrival times are within Marine Guidelines, having due regard to weather conditions, tides, size and nature of vessel and communicate primarily with VTS but also as required agents, pilots and shipmasters
  • Work with other Asset Managers on developing new business opportunities
  • Attending meetings with Asset Managers, port users, local stakeholders and customers as required
  • Managing Marine staff and Marine assets to ensure safe and efficient operation
  • Working with the PLA Conservancy team, ensuring depths of water are maintained at the required depths, ruling depths are published and safe UKC maintained
  • Notifying the Asset and Site Director of any nonstandard issue or incidents
  • Notifying the Chief Harbour Master of any nonstandard marine matters as per Port Marine Safety Code
  • Working with CHM and Port management on the marine element of any project work

What are we looking for?

  • Suitable senior seagoing experience with Merchant Navy Certificate of Competency (deck or engineer), or equivalent qualification such as Harbour Master Certificate or Royal Navy certificate, or degree level education with suitable professional qualifications
  • Relevant Port Management experience as Harbour Master or Deputy Harbour Master
  • Experience of managing people and working with different teams of people
  • Experience of project management in a Port/Marine environment
  • Knowledge of Port Marine Safety Code.
  • Understanding of Port and River Byelaws, General Directions, and other relevant information
