Description

As Head of Private Office, you will act as as the key focal point between the senior leader and their teams, the wider organisation, and external stakeholders.

You will ensure your senior leader gets the right information at the right times to support decision making, steer the organisation and manage engagement across the energy sector, consumer groups, Whitehall and beyond.

You'll work with a range of internal and external stakeholders and also hold the responsibility of Personal Development Lead for your team, mentoring and coaching your team to achieve their full potential.

We're looking for a dynamic leader, who has strong collaborations skills and the ability to build strong diverse relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

You'll have solid expertise / capability in professional specialism and experience working with and gaining trust and confidence of senior leaders.

It goes without saying, the ability to work at pace and under pressure is essential for this senior role, along with exceptional communication skills and the ability to distil complex information, verbal and written.

Although beneficial, recent or prior experience of working with or in a government department is not essential.

Ofgem works on behalf of energy consumers to ensure that every household and business in the UK can rely on a safe and environmentally sustainable energy supply.

It is a challenging and exciting time to join Ofgem, and our private office teams operate at the heart of the organisation.

A number of roles are available as Head of Private Office in the CEO and Chair, DG Retail, DG Infrastructure, and COO private offices.


The Head of Private Office will act as high-level gateway between the senior leader and their teams, the wider organisation, and external stakeholders.

Each role-holder will be responsible for ensuring their senior leader gets the right information at the right times to support decision making, steer the organisation and manage engagement across the energy sector, consumer groups, Whitehall and beyond.

The work is fast paced, highly varied and purposeful, and requires excellent communication and influencing skills, the ability to collaborate effectively, a highly developed grasp of policy and political dynamics, and strong management and delivery skills.

  • Lead multidisciplinary teams in a specific work area in the context of operating in a Professions and Flexible Resourcing model.
  • Plan, oversee and deliver a set of work deliverables on time and to a high standard through effective project management and support of multidisciplinary team members.
  • Provide inclusive team leadership by supporting and developing team members and demonstrating commitment to Ofgem values.

Key Responsibilities

Delivery of set of team deliverables, and managing and co-ordinating successful outcomes across team members and collaborating teams

  • Sets clear and transparent work objectives, milestones and success metrics at team and individual level to oversee and coordinate successful team outcomes.
  • Collaborates closely with other teams to manage interdependencies, risks, and resourcing to support portfolio delivery.
  • Jointly responsible with the PDL on welfare and pastoral care of all colleagues.
  • Demonstrates effective diversity and inclusive team management within their team and the wider organisation.
  • Steers the organisation to deliver high quality advice and recommendations, building strong relationships across Ofgem to ensure the advice is tailored to requirements.
  • Ensures the efficient operation of the Private Office by overseeing and prioritising the daytoday flow of papers, briefings, meeting objectives, actions and wider business activities.
  • Builds effective relationships on behalf of the senior leader within Ofgem, regulatory bodies, government, and external stakeholders.
  • Represents the senior leader in meetings when required to ensure their views are represented.
