Business and Planning Lead for
A Better Start Southend (ABSS) and you might be just the person we need

This is a key role working with a range of teams across the whole of the Programme to deliver on the A Better Start Southend's strategic and business priorities.

  • This role will have a hybrid working arrangement of 2 days in the office and 3 days working from home. Specific days will be agreed with your line manager once established into the role._

In 2014, the Early Years Alliance, in partnership with Southend City Council, was awarded £40m by the National Lottery Community Fund to innovate and develop interventions to improve the life chances of over 13,000 babies and young children across Southend on Sea over a 10-year period.

Main duties:


  • Lead the business planning processes for A Better Start Southend.
  • Coordinate the strategy refresh and facilitate the update of the ABSS corporate strategy, taking into account the legacy and sustainability focus of the next two years.
  • Establish excellent, supportive working relationships with department, team and thematic work area leaders.
  • Ensure that business plans are developed in conjunction with leads, and that they are regularly reviewed and monitored to drive progress.
  • Lead the governance process and ensure alignment with the business planning process.
  • Ensure that the flow of papers meets the needs of the Partnership.

Essential criteria:


  • A management or business qualification at degree level (or working towards)
  • Experience of inputting into, reviewing and monitoring business plans
  • Experience of leading a thematic area of work, related to organisational business or strategy
  • Experience of working within a governance framework
  • An understanding of how governance works and decisionmaking flows through a governance framework
  • Experience of leading individuals within an organisation, either through line management or matrix management
  • Can demonstrate the ability to set out complex ideas succinctly so that they are accessible and able to be understood by people at different levels
  • Able to translate knowledge, skills and previous experiences to solve problems
  • An understanding of the impact of business planning on resource planning
  • Knowledge and understanding of how planning, governance and decisions ultimately impact babies, children, parents and families in Southend on Sea
  • Experience in using Microsoft office tools such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint
