This post is integral to the team working in Twyn Glas Unit Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.

The post holder will be expected to work a 24 hour shift pattern with day to day line management provided by Twyn Glas unit manager.

The post holder will work as part of a team under the guidance and supervision of the Band 5 Registered Nurses and the Band 4 psychological therapies support worker.

Additional supervision may be provided jointly with the Band 4 therapies support worker by the Qualified Psychological Therapist.


The post holder will support all therapies within the unit but will have a particular area of interest in psychological therapies and emotional well-being and as such will work closely with the unit Band 4 Psychological Therapies support worker.

This more specific role will be to support the band 4 psychological therapies support worker to implement and embed psychological and creative emotional well-being approaches to adults with learning disability on an individual or group basis.

They will also follow therapeutic interventions as recommended by a range of therapy professionals and assistants. They will be able to role model therapeutic interventions to other staff.

The post holder will be expected to undertake specific technical and administrative tasks as directed by the Registered Nurse, Band 4 Psychological Therapies Support Worker, and as agreed by the Supervising Psychological Therapist.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Therapeutic - specialist activity delegated from supervising Psychological Therapist and working under the guidance of the unit Psychological Therapies support worker

  • Develop knowledge and skills to support the health and emotional wellbeing of service users with complex physical and sensory needs with profound learning disabilities.
  • To support the Band 4 Psychological Therapies Support worker in gathering information for the psychological therapist to inform psychological assessments, and contribute to developing formulations, goals and interventions for the individual service users
  • To demonstrate specific Positive Behavioural Support interventions or other psychological approaches to staff and others within the unit as agreed with the Band 4 psychological therapies support worker and psychological therapist.
  • To accompany and assist the Band 4 psychological therapies support worker during assessment and interventions
  • To support and be directed by the Band 4 Psychological Therapies support worker in the functional analysis of service user's behaviour using informal methods of assessment (e.g. direct and indirect observational tools)
  • To support the band 4 psychological therapies support worker in implementing psychologically therapeutic interventions e.g. artsbased and nonverbal, behavioural support plans, PECS, TEACCH
  • To contribute to the evaluation of outcome of interventions
  • To be able to express sound reasoning for their clinical practice
  • To support the band 4 psychological therapies support worker in the use of the interactive projection at Arts therapies facilities at County Hospital
  • To recognise own limitations within clinical practice/knowledge and to seek advice from the Band 4 psychological therapies support worker / psychological therapist, to clarify the appropriate course of action in cases that are beyond their clinical experience
