Trainee Health Visitor


One year training, commencing in September 2023 and January 2024, facilitated by NHS Lothian and Queen Margaret University (QMU), leading to a permanent Band 7 health visiting post on successful completion.

An exciting opportunity for experienced nurses and midwives who are keen to pursue a career in health visiting and improve outcomes for children and their families.

Successful applicants will commit to a permanent post that entails one-year of full-time study to undertake the Post Graduate Diploma in

Person Centred Practice:
Health Visiting (level 11) at QMU, Edinburgh, alongside practice placement in Lothian.

On completion of the programme and registration on Part 3 of the NMC register, you will automatically progress to a Band 7 health visiting post.

Successful graduates will be expected to consolidate practice within NHS Lothian for two years post registration.

  • Be an experienced nurse or midwife currently on the NMC register
  • Be free to undertake full time study commencing September 2023 or January 202
  • Be available for interview during the week of the 15th to 18th of May 202
  • Have the required academic credit rating/or evidence of recent study.

Degree obtained within last 5 years

= meets criteria

Degree older than 5 years + level 11 study within last 5 years

= meets criteria

Degree older than 5 years and no level 11 study. 1500-word essay if selected

= meets criteria

Degree older than 10 years + level 11 study in past 5 years

= meets criteria

No degree + level 11 study in past 5 years

= meets criteria

Degree and/or level 11 study older than 10 years requires discussion with QMU and an agreed outcome prior to applying

  • Please ensure that one of the two references requested is your line manager
  • Trainees follow the University calendar for all holidays during the course and cannot take leave out with this. Normal NHS leave is suspended during training.
  • Annexe 21(U): Trainees are paid at least 75% of B7 point 8, see separate sheet for terms and conditions
