We are looking to recruit a Process Safety Specialist to join our Drug Substance Manufacture (DSM) function within Pharmaceutical Technology and Development (PT&D) in order to provide hazard evaluation to support internal and external customers such as Process Chemists & Engineers, Global SHE (Safety, Health & Environment) etc.


Accountabilities:


  • Assessing the Chemical Reaction & Fire & Explosion Hazards associated with processes designed to produce clinical and commercial APIs and drug products.
  • Providing an appropriate Basis of Safety for assessed processes, thereby ensuring safe development and manufacture.
  • Collaborating with customer base to provide expert process safety advice.
  • Developing and maintaining high levels of expertise in the field of process safety
  • Collaboratively helping to design, develop and implement global best practice in process safety
  • To identify, champion and develop new ideas and gain acceptance by local Departmental Management
  • To provide scientific or technical supervision to for example Senior Scientists and Scientists to enable them to optimally meet their project objectives
  • To lead a small team of scientists in the provision of new science, technologies, method, practices and ways of working
  • To provide chemical reaction hazard leadership and present work through publications and lectures
These activities will significantly contribute to the development and operation of safe processes for the production of clinical and commercial materials to enable the treatment of patients


Additional responsibilities include:


Proactively seek out opportunities, you will introduce and implement new insights or work processes to enhance performance, productivity, SHE etc.

  • When appropriate you will publish papers and reviews in internationally recognised journals
  • You will be an active member of scientific discipline networks
  • You will be able to demonstrate creativity and innovation on projects

Essential Requirements

  • Create and implement an efficient and effective testing plan, conducting hazard experimentation in accordance with PT&D's global working principles and quality system with appropriate safety (SHE). This will include maintaining knowledge of the regulatory and compliance guidelines as related to the role.
  • Operate and calibrate (or have the ability to learn how to) laboratory equipment used in the assessment of hazards in line with local procedures e.g. DSC, C80, TAM, RC1, Similar, CPA, ARC, Dewar, Static test equipment etc
  • Accurately assessing, recording and reporting data with a clear understanding of its reliability. You'll also interpret the findings to draw authoritative conclusions and make suitable recommendations to produce a basis of safe operation which includes the chemical reaction and fire & explosion hazards associated with handling solids, liquids, vapours and dusts
  • Understanding of the importance of kinetic analysis of the thermochemistry in hazard assessment you will have experience in the use of kinetic software (e.g. AKTS, Dynochem)
  • Prepare documentation and formal chemical reaction and fire & explosion reports in line with current standards within the committed project timelines
  • Provide training across the AZ functions and to our external partners in chemical reaction and fire & explosion hazards
  • Present information for discussion at project teams, or with higher levels within AZ with the ability to influence colleagues in other areas/functions and/or in external groups
  • Work as a member of crossfunctional teams, with a large degree of independence representing own department or area of expertise

Desirable Requirements:


  • A PhD or be an experienced graduate in either Chemistry or Engineering with a detailed understanding of research and development and the contribution that PT&D makes to the development and launch of new medicines
  • Good understanding of the disciplines involved in chemical reaction hazards and a broader understanding of Process Safety Management and the role it plays within Drug Substance Manufacture
  • Innovative and proactive with a curiosity about best practice and new developments within the Pharmaceutical industry, you will be able to engage your peers and challenge old ways of working
