KPMG International (KPMGI) is the entity with which all member firms of the KPMG global organization are affiliated. KPMGI carries on business activities for the overall benefit of the KPMG global organization, but does not itself provide professional services to clients. One of the main purposes of KPMGI is to facilitate the provision by member firms of quality Audit, Tax and Advisory services to their clients, including through the use of technology.

The International Office of the General Counsel (IOGC) is a growing and high-performing in-house legal team with personnel based in five countries. The team provides legal advice on a wide variety of key strategic matters and legal, regulatory and reputational issues and risks, and also supports the execution of critical business decisions made by KPMGI.

Role Summary


This role will play an important part of the technology, intellectual property (IP) and data practice in IOGC, which plays a pivotal role in providing legal support for - and advising on legal risks, protections and opportunities related to - KPMG's IP, technology and data strategy, value chain and revenue-growing initiatives.

The role will focus on mitigating against legal risks while supporting the organization's growth through use of technology.

It will provide opportunities to deliver legal advice to KPMGI leaders and their teams on a diverse range of IP, technology and data matters that support KPMG's Collective Strategy and Global strategic priorities as well as the strategic goals of KPMG's global functions.

We expect the role will make an impact on the organization's goals of embedding technology in everything KPMG does, developing technology solutions that suit member firm clients' needs and leveraging data.

Strategic Global Initiatives:Support strategic global initiatives focused on IP, technology, and commercial / non-personal data by providing legal support and advice on: (i) network arrangements for the acquisition, divestiture, development, licensing and sharing of technology with KPMG member firms; (ii) global priority technology solutions; (iii) commercial / non-personal data acquisition and licensing (including with respect to ESG initiatives); and (iv) emerging technology such as artificial intelligence and blockchain.

Legal Aspects of Enterprise Risk Management for Technology and Data:Provide legal support and advice to multi-functional working groups focused on the development of technology and commercial data policies, guidelines and contract term templates. This work will involve substantial influencing of, and collaborating regularly with KPMGI professionals in audit, tax, advisory, risk management, technology and procurement, as well as member firm legal and risk colleagues.

Technology Legal Rights Assessments: Assess whether KPMGI has proper IP and data rights to license and/or provide member firms and their clients with use and/or access rights to KPMGI technology solutions. This work will also include determining whether any specific terms are required through the license chain and ensuring compliance with the legal aspects of KPMGI's global quality and risk management policies.

General Technology, IP and Data Projects: Provide legal support on commercial technology transactions (e.g., procurement and technology alliances), product and innovation strategies, and regulatory-driven projects (e.g., technology export controls) as needed.

Training and Education:Train and educate KPMGI professionals on legal and regulatory risks related to technology design and development and use of data in technology solutions.


Technical Skills

  • Advanced technical legal skills in the areas of IP and technology law, with a focus on providing legal advice on acquiring, divesting, developing, licensing and sharing of technology solutions and commercial / nonpersonal data and understanding how IPrelated risks influence enterprise risk.
  • Strong negotiation and drafting skills across a wide variety of technology, IP and data agreements and transaction structures across various jurisdictions, as well as addressing complex legal, business and technical issues.
  • Advanced communication skills to enable the translation of complex legal and regulatory issues, within the context of complex technical and business issues, into easily understandable advice, policies and guidance.

We are looking for a qualified lawyer with at least 6 years PQE (or equivalent if not England and Wales qualified).
