An excellent opportunity has arisen for a driven individual to join our Senior Leadership Team.

The purpose of this role is to support the Director of Welsh Blood Service providing strategic and operational leadership, ensuring effective oversight of key functions across the Welsh Blood Service and supporting key internal and external relationships via a number of committees and working groups.

In addition, the post holder is responsible for the strategic direction, leadership, operational, financial, scientific and clinical management and service delivery for Transfusion Services (to include on call this role will be trained to be a consultant HD&I on call) at the main site in Talbot Green and the stock holding unit in Wrexham.


You will provide scientific and operational expertise on:
Manufacturing, Testing and Distribution of blood components

Red cell immunohematology routine antenatal and patient reference testing

Distribution of commercial blood products

  • You will be accountable for ensuring effective, efficient and safe delivery of highquality services within Transfusion Laboratory Services, which include the Automated Testing, Manufacturing and Red Cell Imunohaematology Laboratories and the two Distribution Hubs in Talbot Green and Wrexham including the achievement of key performance targets.
  • Responsible for informing the strategy/ delivery and performance goals for the scientific and technological areas across transfusion laboratory services.
  • You will be required to operate as the Responsible Person for the Blood Establishment and Wholesale Dealers Licence Designated Individual as required by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) for licensing of the WBS ensuring the statutory and regulatory requirements are met.
  • You will, participate at a senior level within the wider scientific transfusion communities on behalf of the WBS in order to foster collaborative relationships with national and international networks to support benchmarking and help shape the future direction of Transfusion Laboratory Service.
  • You will participate in the Senior Leadership Team on call rota, supporting the SLT in delivering effective services out of hours and assuming overall operational management responsibility for the WBS' Transfusion Laboratories as part of major incident escalation.

As the Responsible Person for the Blood Establishment and Wholesale Dealers Licence you will be expected to have extensive knowledge of blood establishment regulations and distribution of medicinal products.
