Age UK is currently recruiting for a unique position in the Charity,
Head of Loneliness Services.


This is a hybrid role that will be linked with one of three office locations: London, Blackpool or Ashburton, Devon.

As an expert on loneliness, you will provide leadership to our national services that help tackle loneliness and isolation.

You will support our strategic ambition to help alleviate loneliness:

overseeing our national loneliness services, working with teams across Age UK and our local partners, collaborating with other relevant organisations, and representing our work externally.


You will contribute to fundraising propositions, inform our policy and influencing work, develop and maintain engaging and meaningful volunteering opportunities, and ensure the support we provide for older people continues to improve and evolve.


Age UK has a London Hub and our loneliness services are currently delivered from two offices in Blackpool and Devon, with hybrid working arrangements where colleagues split time between office and home working. This role can be based in any of the three locations mentioned, and will require regular travel (approximately 4-6 working days per month) with overnight stays to work and attend meetings across all our office locations.

Must haves:

  • Significant understanding of loneliness and isolation, and how it can impact older people.
  • Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding, and the delivery of safe services at scale.
  • Knowledge and experience of measuring and evaluating impact.
  • A proven track record of motivational leadership, creating a positive team culture, and providing opportunities for colleagues personal and professional development (both immediate line reports and throughout wider teams).
  • Knowledge and experience of developing digital platforms and using technology to deliver and support the efficient and effective delivery of services at scale.
  • Experience of involving volunteers in service delivery.
  • Experience of working collaboratively in a fast paced, complex environment building networks with a diverse range of people at different levels of seniority across divisions.
  • Leading and managing complex programmes of work.
  • Experience leading and delivering large, complex change programmes (including service design, technology, people etc.)
  • Budget and contract management and reporting.

Great to haves:


  • Experience of working in charities and/or a federated charity structure.
  • Understanding of the policy and fundraising landscape for isolation / loneliness support.
  • Management experience at a senior level.
