Description

The purpose of the role is:

To support College attendance, retention and achievement strategies by providing a high-quality pro-active learning support service for learners with an identified learning difficulty or disability (LLDD), with a particular focus on adult learners, apprentices and those with complex learning needs.


  • To provide support for learning that contributes to an outstanding student experience from the start of the college journey to progression into further study or employment.
  • To work directly with Personal Tutors, curriculum staff and Wellbeing Services to ensure learners are fully engaged with all aspects of their Study Programme and achieving to the best of their ability.
  • To support learners to improve their literacy and numeracy skills.
  • To assist Specialist Learning Support team in the delivery of support services across College.
  • To assist in the development of learning materials to support learners with a range of additional support needs.

KEY ROLES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:


  • To provide support and guidance by removing barriers to learning in order to promote effective participation, enhance individual learning, raise aspirations and achieve full potential.
  • To contribute to the identification of barriers to learning for individual learners and provide them with a range of strategies for overcoming the barriers.
  • To be confident in demonstrating the use of assistive technologies to support learners.
  • To provide, on a one to one and group basis, high quality interventions that encourage learners to engage and enable the achievement of realistic yet challenging goals to support future success and progression.
  • Promote independence and empower students to make progress towards their achievement and champion learning support and inclusion.
  • To measure the impact of one to one and group work carried out in order to evaluate effectiveness and inform continual improvement.
  • To manage a flexible caseload of learners, prioritising those with attendance, retention, achievement or support needs.
  • To facilitate regular caseload progress reviews with Personal Tutors, in order to create and implement effective support and stretch strategies for learners.
  • To assist in preentry activities such as recruitment events, enrolment activities and assessment of support needs.
  • To deliver initial assessment activities and use the results to inform support needs, devise Individual Support Plans and set challenging SMART targets and track progress.
  • To ensure the collection, checking and inputting of information relating to learners across relevant College systems such as Unite and ProMonitor to support the successful monitoring and evaluation of Specialist Learning Support provision.
  • To understand barriers to learning and to support learners to overcome these by developing innovative practice and delivering a consistently outstanding service.
  • To support and encourage learners to utilise assistive technology and foster resilience, independence and confidence.
  • To have an enhanced understanding of FE/ ALS funding and auditing requirements for learners with additional learning needs.
  • Support colleagues from Learning Centres to develop effective individualised strategies to meet learners support needs.
  • To work closely with Personal Tutors to provide and deliver comprehensive group and support tutorial sessions, ensuring continuous service.
  • To produce statistics to regularly evaluate the impact of services, improve service standards and contribute to the Colleges' quality processes.
  • To actively publicise support services to all students and staff.
  • To coordinate alternative exam arrangements, ensuring that the MIS team, exams team and appropriate staff are fully appraised of arrangements that need to be made to comply with JCQ requirements.
  • To compile Specialist Teacher Reports and complete Form 8 documentation.
  • To liaise and consult with Specialist Learning Support Lead to ensure all exam access arrangements are completed and meet all regulation requirements.
  • To undertake duties as a First Aider.
  • To undertake duties as a Fire Marshal.
  • To undertake duties as an Exam Invigilator.

GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • To commit to the safeguarding and promotion of the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults
  • To participate in the College's Performance Management Scheme and attend such training events as are necessary to enable him/her to carry out the duties of the job description.
  • To continually improve teaching, learning and assessment through proactive CPD and sharing best practice.
  • To actively participate in the College's Quality System, including quality improvement strategies and initiatives.
  • To undertake such other duties as may be assigned commensurate with the grade and purpose of the post.
  • To take reasonable care for the health and safety of him/her and for others affected by his/her work.
