GENERAL EXPECTATIONS

As a member of the boarding staff, the Housemother is expected to work as part of a team which contributes to the life and running of the boarding house.

The Housemother is expected to be interested in the students and to keep their welfare in mind at all times.

While a major responsibility lies in the efficient administrative functioning of the boarding house, their other equally important role is to be found in the area of pastoral care.

It is imperative that the Housemother is seen as an integral part of the pastoral "family" and as such they can be invaluable as a 'friendly ear'.

Listening to home news, classroom issues, social relationships and sporting achievements is an important aspect of the role.

It is important to observe that, as the Housemother lives in the house on her shift, she is in contact with all boarders and can often be the first one to notice when a boarder is homesick, has friendship problems, is disorganised, lacks basic hygiene or is not themselves.

If a house is a safe and caring environment, it will be in no small part due to the role played by the Housemother and it will be evidenced by the way the boarders relate to each other and to the other house staff and wider community.
