Consultant Clinical/Counselling Psychologist (Lead for Long Term Health Conditions)


An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a thriving and expanding medical psychology service who are working to provide psychological assessment, support and treatment to medical patients within South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.


The service has structure of work streams which provide psychological input to a number of medical specialties and provide staff support and training.

We are looking for a Consultant Psychologist to lead the long-term conditions work stream which consists of experienced and skilled clinicians working into long term health condition medical specialties.


The post holder will provide operational oversight, management, clinical leadership and specialist psychological input to the long-term conditions pathway (including: pain, rheumatology, renal, specialist weight management, HIV, long COVID, diabetes, chronic fatigue).

This will involve working collaboratively with clinical staff to develop the work stream vision and identity and to ensure equity of access and continuity of provision across these clinical areas.

It will also involve some direct clinical work as needed.

The post holder will also work strategically to support the Trust's mental health strategy.

They will lead on mapping current provision of services to identify gaps, and work with internal and external stakeholders to develop a plan to ensure equity of access to psychological support across the Trust.


As a consultant psychologist within the team the post holder would also be expected to be part of the consultant body and have active involvement in the strategic and operational development of the medical psychology service as a whole.

Medical Psychology


The Medical Psychology service is made up of Clinical Psychologists, Counselling Psychologists, Health Psychologists, Psychological Therapists, Counsellors and Assistant Psychologist.

We deliver psychological assessment, intervention and support to patients with a range of medical conditions across the lifespan.

We utilise third wave therapies (especially Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and Mindfulness) alongside CBT as the core therapeutic modalities, with training and supervision provided to support delivery of these approaches.

We also carry out clinical audit, research and service evaluation.

We have strong links with the Doctoral Training Programmes at the University of Teesside, and we provide teaching, placements and research projects for Clinical Psychology, Counselling Psychology and Health Psychology trainees.

The Trust encourages innovation and service development, and we actively support this within the Medical Psychology service.
