Job Purpose:


As Network Security Officer, your purpose is to look after overall security of the Docklands Light Railway network in regard to low level crime and anti-social behaviour as an enhancement of security and filling the gap between Travel Safe Officers and Police.

Network Security Officers will be required to work in pairs at all times.

If working night shift, then at the time when train services are not running, they are to join the Night TSO on patrols.


You will be expected to patrol or attend locations as allocated in the roster to tackle specific issues or perform a behavioural type of patrols.

NSOs minimum requirements will be built in to roster of 10hrs per shift, 4on-4off.


The shift times may vary between day time and night time, NSOs will receive monthly to make them aware of the timings.

There is no set times allocated as the role needs to be flexible for purposes of tackling security issues at the times these occur.


Your main duties and responsibilities as Network Security Officer:

  • Reduction of Trespass and train surfing incidents
  • Reduction of School Children and general antisocial behaviour
  • Response to vagrant/rough sleeper call outs to move them on according to agreed process
  • Reduction of rough/sleeping and drug use on the network
  • Reduction of asset vandalism (broken infrastructure and graffiti)
  • Support in revenue disputes and workrelated violence incidents
  • Report suspicious and criminal activity (provision of intelligence to KAD and BTP)
  • Issuing penalty fares where applicable for breach of Byelaws (drinking alcohol, smoking, trespass etc)
  • Monitoring passenger behaviour and resolving any antisocial behaviour at the allocated location/route
  • Responding to reports of vagrants when called by control centre
  • Addressing any trespass incidents that they should attend, and, the issuing PFN or IR to the trespasser/s where relevant.
  • Addressing any attempted suicides (as part of the trespass)
  • Assisting BTP and KAD security operations.
  • Patrol stations and other network locations such as compounds or substations as prescribed (this may include requests to patrol depots and other premises operated and maintained by KAD)
  • Participate in joint rough sleeper patrols with council and charity
  • Report all witnessed security incidents and issues using appropriate methods
  • Highvisibility patrols at set locations
  • Assist KAD/ISS staff in response to security related incidents such as workrelated violence, criminal activity, first aid or fire incidents.


Due to enforcement type of role, staff must wear Body Worn Video (BWV), in order to report and deter incidents of ASB etc.

BWV must be activated during enforcement, conflict or criminal incidents, for all other occurrences the BWV can be activated at the discretion of the operator in order to provide supporting evidence.


Working Hours:

NSOs minimum requirements will be built in to roster of 10hrs per shift, 4on-4off. (paid lunch break, which means NSOs will be expected to be available during their lunch too)


The shift times may vary between day time and night time, NSOs will receive monthly rosters from client to make them aware of the timings.

There is no set times allocated as the role needs to be flexible for purposes of tackling security issues at the times these occur.

NSOs will be expected to work minimum 10hr shift.

If longer shift (max 12 hours) is required the client will propose that no less than 48hrs in advance, but NSO may refuse extra hours.

Any overtime (additional to the 4on-4off 10 hour shift) will be proposed in advance by client.


Person Specification:


Due to the nature of the role, you will need to have excellent communication skills, be able to stand for long periods of time (outside most of the time) and have a good ability when monitoring people's behaviour.

You need to be assertive but polite and respectful. Having knowledge/understanding of the DLR is required, in order to be able to assist passengers where necessary.
