We are delighted to advertise a replacement role for a Consultant Chemical Pathologist within the department of Pathology with 10 Programmed Activities (PAs); 9 PAs at the Great Western Hospital, Swindon and 1 PA at Oxford University Hospitals, John Radcliffe site.
The Blood Sciences department at the Great Western Hospital (GWH) is fully UKAS accredited and delivers a comprehensive service to the hospital and local area.

The post holder is required to be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award of CCT or equivalent, by date of interview.
The Duties outlined below are not definitive and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the service.
The holder of this post is expected to help to provide a comprehensive clinical biochemistry service for all users of the laboratory.
The Consultant will provide expert support for the diagnosis and management of biochemical clinical problems, advise on appropriate investigations for individual patients and help to determine the repertoire provided by the Clinical Biochemistry Department within the resources made available to the Division.
The Consultant will take a lead role in clinical liaison and clinical audit.The post holder will be expected to participate in an out-of-hours consultant rota.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
The appointee will be expected to spend one day per week in the Department of Chemical Pathology at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford.
The Oxford department is involved in many research projects and has links with many other departments within the Oxford University Hospitals Trust and the University of Oxford.
It is committed to research and will support the appointee in furthering their research interests.Oxford has a strong track record in obtaining research grants and both local and national monies may be available for suitable research.
TEACHING
The appointee if suitably qualified would be invited to help teach on the Laboratory Medicine course for first year clinical students of the University of Oxford (see above) and for clinical students from the University of Bristol Medical School attending the GWH Academy on the 3rd year pathology module in Swindon.
The department at the Great Western Hospital is approved for training of biomedical scientists and the department in Oxford is approved for training of biomedical scientists, clinical scientists and medical trainees in Clinical Biochemistry.
MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
All consultants in pathology are accountable through the Clinical Lead for Pathology Services to the Associate Medical Director, who has overall responsibility for the services within the Division.
Consultants are key members of the Divisional team and are accountable and responsible for leading changes to service that will improve the patient experience.
To support the Clinical Lead for Pathology Services in policy and strategy development as a senior member of the Pathology Management Team.
To contribute to the leadership and development of clinical and laboratory Chemical Pathology under the direction of the Clinical Lead for Pathology Services and Associate Medical Director, in line with the Division's and Trust's business plans.
he post holder will ensure effective communication and involvement of staff across the Division including support to the Divisional Director to achieve their objectives.
As part of the Divisional Management Team, assist in the cost-effective utilisation of resources, including pay and non-pay items such as equipment and drugs, within budgets.
