County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS) is looking to recruit a highly motivated and enthusiastic health & safety advisor.

The _
health & safety_ section forms part of the Emergency Responsedirectorate and is responsible for ensuring the Service meets it's legal, moral, and financial duties related to health, safety, and welfare.


Key responsibilities include:


  • Development, coordination, and delivery of health and safety information, instruction and guidance to staff. Including the maintenance of training and CPD resources.
  • Initial point of contact for health & safety queries, providing advice, guidance, solutions, and general support.
  • Maintaining the Services health & safety administrative functions and SharePoint site.
  • Ensure information on accidents, health & safety, injury details and investigation reports are accurately recorded, and statistics are compiled to identify causes and trends.
  • Support incident investigations and quality assurance of health & safety investigations to ensure compliance with enforcement authority guidance.
  • Assist in the identification, coordination, completion, and approval of appropriate risk assessments, including providing appropriate advice on suitable and sufficient risk assessments.
  • Carry out planned and unplanned inspections of premises, plant, and equipment to ensure that current health and safety policies are in place in conjunction with representative bodies.
  • Develop and maintain positive collaborative relationships with all relevant internal and external stakeholders.
  • Attend relevant Service meetings and groups. Collate and present information on health & safety performance and attend and contribute to relevant committees, meetings, seminars and participate in task groups as required.
  • Collate, disseminate and update documents relating to the Services Joint Health and Safety Committee
  • To deputise for the Health & Safety Advisor where required.

The ideal person profile includes:


  • NEBOSH Certificate.
  • Assoc Membership of IOSH.
  • Level 3 Award in Education and Training
  • Clear evidence of continuous professional development,
  • Experience of working in a health and safety role.
  • Ability to analyse and interpret information.
  • Ability to support an environment of continuous improvement.
  • Experience of working with policies and procedures
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to develop & maintain positive and collaborative working relationships.
  • Able to work on own and use discretion and initiative.
  • High standard of IT skills
  • Understand the functions of relevant organisations e.g., HSE, TUC.
  • Awareness of relevant workplace legislation and directives.
  • Ability to write accurate and effective reports on Health & Safety matters.
  • Ability to understand current legislation and best practice.
