Description
We are looking to recruitment a Band 4 Cancer Buddy Service Coordinator to join our Team.

The post holder will co-ordinate the Buddy service, acting as a central point of contact for Buddies and patients.

They should adopt a partnership approach working under the supervision of the Macmillan Personalised Care Team to deliver an effective and efficient Cancer Buddy service that will empower and support patients affected by cancer.

The Cancer Buddy co-ordinator will be expected to adopt a pastoral approach to the role, both towards patients and Cancer Buddies.

The post holder must always demonstrate an understanding for the sensitive nature of working within cancer services, and should have mature, well developed interpersonal skills to enable them to support both Cancer Buddies and patients.


The role will entail comprehensive secretarial and administrative duties in order to co-ordinate the Cancer Buddy service, this will include independent computer-based working, maintaining telephone contacts and face-to-face interactions.


The co-ordinator should maintain an overview of the Cancer Buddy service, from enrolment and training of Buddies and subsequently ongoing co-ordination, support and evaluation of the Cancer Buddy service.

Personal Accountability

  • Provide first point of contact with patients, Cancer Buddies and others.
  • Appropriately communicate with patients and Cancer Buddies (over the phone and face to face) to facilitate Buddy / patient appointment co-ordination.
  • Understand signposting to patients and Buddies across primary, secondary and third sector parties.
  • Be aware of personal limitations and to seek assistance from other team members as needed.
  • Use initiative and judgement to organise own workload on a day-to-day basis without close supervision, responding to the requirements of the service.
Patient Telephone Interaction

  • Field incoming telephone calls, co-ordinate Buddy support and signpost to appropriate person or service.
  • Act as the main point of access for cancer patients and Buddies.
  • Ensure clear documentation of all interactions made with patient, Buddy or staff member.
  • Liaise with the team as appropriate as to ensure that all non-routine and complex decisions are escalated to the appropriate professional for assessment and review.
  • Undertake routine phone calls as required to maintain a proficient quality of service.
  • Collect and enter all relevant data pertaining to phone calls into local database software.

  • To act as an 'ambassador' for the Cancer Buddy service.
  • To support the collection and maintenance of information regarding onward signposting services for patients following their cancer treatment.
  • Support Macmillan Personalised Care Team in collection of data to support audits and patient surveys.
  • Document and monitor all aspects of service delivery.
