School Nurse
Temporary - Term Time only - 6 Month fixed term contract
Monday to Friday (8.15am to 4.15pm) - 35 hours per week
Grade - Actual Pro-Rata Salary - £19,460 to £25,928 per annum

JOB PURPOSE

The School Nurse is responsible for providing a clinically effective, high-quality service of nursing care to pupils and first aid care to all members of the school community.

The School Nurse is part of a wider pastoral and First Aid team whose aim is to promote the physical health and emotional wellbeing of Senior School pupils.

This support, in conjunction with the wider pastoral team, is designed to meet a wide range of day-to-dayneeds; from meeting the physical needs of some pupils and the administration of first aid, to guiding pupils who might need psychological support, the role is a varied but vital one in the school community.


MAIN ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Professional Duties

  • Adhere to the NMC Code of professional conduct and be conversant with the scope of professional practice and other NMC advisory papers.
  • Keep uptodate with professional developments through the NMC, Royal College of Nursing, Independent Schools' Nurses Special Interest Group.
  • Adhere to a code of confidentiality.
  • Supporting the AHTWell and DHPS, contribute to the creation and implementation of clear and measurable Strategic Development Plans and Policies which support the vision for pupils' medical care and wellbeing
  • Lead by example to uphold the ethos and values.
  • Be responsible for the smooth and efficient running of the Medical Centre whilst on duty.
Nursing and Medical Care

  • To provide a high standard of nursing care to pupils and first aid/emergency care to members of staff and any visitors while on site.

This will include but is not limited to:

  • Assessing students who come to the Medical Centre and/or require your professional help elsewhere on site, administering first aid, arranging medical appointments or, if appropriate, sending them to their classes if they are believed to be well enough. operatingschool policy and procedures in the case of illness which involves contacting staff, parents, hospital etc., and arranging safe transport of the pupil home or to hospital. dealing with all medical emergencies throughout School.
  • Issuing paracetamol and asthma inhalers as required under strict guidelines.
  • Providing first aid during 'at Home' sports fixture including at weekends.
  • Providing health advice to staff organising school trips, in particular for residential and overseas visit; review trip lists and train staff accordingly in readiness for the trips i.e. to administer medication, 1st aid and epipens. Provide first aid kitsas required.
  • Following good practice and specific directives on immunisation procedures relevant to the school population and individuals as requested by the local Health Authority.
  • Operating procedures for control of infectious diseases, including emergency planning and liaising with the local Health Authority as appropriate.
  • Liaising with appropriate staff to monitor information regarding absences and other medical matters.
  • Liaising with outside agencies, the Health Trust Nurse, the School Doctor, CAHMS, Mental Health organisations as required.
General Wellbeing of Pupils and Staff

  • Actively support the emotional wellbeing of staff and pupils in KH
  • Counsel pupils and staff on medical and social problems.
  • Provide support / be involved in child protection issues as required and for which the necessary training will be provided.
Record Keeping and General Administration

  • Keep clear and precise medical records of all visits and dispensed medication.
  • Ensure comprehensive notes and records are made in relation to incidents/accidents, and reported to relevant staff as necessary within the appropriate confines of confidentiality.
  • Ensure that while medical and personal confidentiality is respected KH8 observes a "joined up" approach in the care if its pupils and staff.
  • Regularly review, update and write medical policies.
  • Ensure the First Aid boxes throughout the school and any First Aid bags carried by certain teaching staff are stocked and products are in date.
  • Maintain the Medical Centre, including ensuring that the treatment rooms are hygienic and comfortable, wellstocked, hygienic and tidy.
  • Be aware and abide by recommended safe storage, usage and disposal of medical supplies, drugs and clinical waste.
  • Manage the medical room budget, keeping accurate records of medical supplies.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • Educated to A Level or equivalent, with Grade C / Grade 4 or above in GCSE English and Mathematics.
  • RGN or RSCN with two or more years' post qualification experience and ideally in a school or educational setting.
  • Qualified first aider with a current (valid) certificate.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to interact with people at all levels, combining confidence and assertiveness in a calm, courteous and professional manner. A pleasant, warm and friendly demeanour.
  • Highly organised with good administrative skills, strong attention to detail and an accurate and thorough approach.
  • Proven ability to prioritise, work methodically and remain calm under pressure.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and experience of/able to work with staff and pupil databases.
  • Car driver and owner, with a clean driving licence, is essential. (Insured for work purposes)
  • Good written, verbal and numeracy skills.
  • Good analytical and decision making skills, able to assess a situation and quickly ascertain best course of action.
  • Strong team player who works collaboratively
