Fairtrade Foundation are recruiting for a Strategic Initiative Lead to deliver complex strategic priority projects for The Fairtrade Foundation in the UK.

This role is working within and across a matrix international team of experts to deliver pioneering changes to Fairtrade's approach to drive change for farmers and workers.

This role will lead priority strategic projects from implementation through to successful completion, including; project governance; developing operational plans; monitoring and delivering project activities; mitigating delivery risks; leading internal stakeholder engagement plans; and developing internal change processes in collaboration with functional leads.

The role will provide project leadership for the operational development and delivery of specific strategic initiatives. The role requires a growth mindset, problem solving focus and a commitment to delivering innovation and results.


You'll need to have a degree or qualification related to international development, agriculture, ethical trade, sustainability and/or equivalent by experience.

If you have experience of working in Tea supply chains, that's great, but it's not essential.

Role Purpose


The Strategy and planning team is responsible for the strategic planning and implementation, design and project management of critical strategic initiatives and the delivery of organisational governance ensuring regulatory compliance.


The Strategic Initiative Lead will join Strategy & Planning team and is responsible for leading and delivering complex strategic priority projects for The Fairtrade Foundation in the UK.

Key deliverables include:

Project development:


  • Develop strong understanding of internal processes, governance and approvals.
  • Develop strong knowledge of wider industry contexts relevant to the specific strategic initiative, working with internal and external experts to identify market and producer needs.
  • Communicate any relevant market and industry trends to both internal and external audiences.
  • Identify and champion any need for change in relation to the strategic initiative, and work in collaboration with functional leads to assess change readiness and impact.

Project Delivery:


  • Develop and deliver a strategic project plan that identifies immediate, medium
- and long-term challenges and solutions in relation to the strategic priority.

  • Work in close partnership with the global Fairtrade movement to deliver an integrated approach for positive change for farmers and workers.
  • Work closely with Deputy Director of Partnerships and Head of Strategy and Planning in UK on ensuring growth initiatives move at pace, respond to market and producer feedback, and create an enabling environment for delivery of priority projects.
  • Act as a key link internally across the Fairtrade Foundation and the global Fairtrade system. Ensuring key deliverables are met and approaches balance market access and producer impact.
