Our client is one of the world's largest and most successful creators, producers and distributors of outstanding television brands, responsible for many of the world's highest rated prime time entertainment, drama, serial drama and factual entertainment.

We are looking to recruit a VP - Legal & Business Affairs to join the high performing and collaborative team.

Reporting to the EVP Head of Legal & Business Affairs, the role will focus mainly on the acquisition of content exploitation rights in independent productions (including various forms of co-productions, deficit financing models and output deals) and in-houseproduced programmes and formats.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering, collaboratively with the Head of Legal & Business Affairs, business and legal affairs support on matters of key strategic, financial and reputational importance to the business;
- ensuring that the highest standards of corporate governance, risk management and compliance with law, policy and regulation are observed at all times;
- direct line management, together with management of the delivery of acquisitions workflow across the team;
- collaboratively supporting the Head of Legal and Business Affairs to provide business affairs deal-making and contractual negotiation in relation to the full breadth of the business including particularly managing the workflow for the acquisition of contentexploitation rights and focussing on scripted content and leading on key acquisitions; co-production and co-financing; television sales; digital distribution; DVD distribution, etc on an international basis.

Knowledge and skills:
We are looking for a lawyer with substantial relevant media experience gained in house or in private practice at a level ensuring interaction with senior executives and:

  • considerable knowledge and experience of international media environments, including particularly production, acquisitions, co-production and co-financing;
- drafting and negotiating contracts in a content licensing environment;
- detailed understanding of contract, commercial and intellectual property law and of the structures and systems within which broadcasters, producers, distributors (whether traditional or non-traditional) operate;
- detailed knowledge of intellectual property rights and clearances, especially music;
- knowledge of production legal work - commissioning, scripted and unscripted, writers, talent and formats;
- knowledge of the legal and regulatory framework within which the business operates;
- in particular knowledge of UK and US broadcasting industry and commercial practice.
