The role of a youth worker is to guide, support and assess young people's needs within the youth club setting, both centre-based or detached, in a universal setting as well as through targeted and issue-based work, by building positive relationships.
To work directly with children and young people to provide positive activities, to offer support and guidance through issue-based work and to provide positive outcomes for young people through appropriate assessment and intervention.
Main Responsibilities:
- To work as part of the Youth Work team to engage and retain 3000 members, visiting 52,000 times per year, taking an active role in developing strategies to engage and retain members including outreach and detached work where required.
- To promote and communicate, with passion and belief, Blackburn Youth Zone's Universal Youth Work offers to members, potential members and their parents/guardians.
- To develop and maintain professional and appropriate relationships with children and young people, offering young people a worldclass service and helping them to be the best they can be.
- To facilitate the members of Blackburn Youth Zone to grow to full maturity as individuals and citizens of society through the delivery of a holistic provision.
- To report to the Team Leaders regarding any followup or developmental work needed with both individual and groups of young people
- To ensure that our members maintain a high standard of behaviour and discipline during sessions in line with our Respect policy.
- To record and evaluate the sessions each night, involving young people in the evaluation process.
- To encourage young people to actively participate in decisionmaking processes and structures.
- To work flexibly to ensure the needs of our members are met, working with partner agencies where appropriate support need specific intervention.
- To have responsibility and commitment to safeguarding the welfare of children and young people at all times, identify and manage risks effectively.
- To promote social integration and inclusion, and proactively challenge any prejudice and discrimination.
- Provide accurate information, advice and guidance to young people, including appropriate specialist partners where specific needs have been identified.
- To promote a positive image of Blackburn Youth Zone through professional operation and conduct with all our stakeholders and the general public.
- To Support the delivering participation programmes that develop Young People's skills and confidence to actively influence decisions that affect them within BYZ and the wider community.
Working hours
The hours of work are those necessary to fulfil the requirements of the position.
This will involve working unsocial hours in evenings and at weekends during Youth Zone sessions or at events, and also working during the day.
Remuneration package
Salary:
£7 - £15 per hour dependant on experience
Holidays: 33 days inclusive of 8 Bank Holidays (pro-rata)
Pension:
Blackburn Youth Zone Pension Scheme; 3% of salary is contributed by the Youth Zone if the employee contributes 3% or more.
Disclosure and Barring Service Check
In accordance with our Child Protection and Safeguarding procedures, this position requires an enhanced DBS check.
