We are looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic person who is committed to improving the quality of service we deliver.

As a PALS & Medical Examiner Officer, your role is to provide a high standard of customer service and support in delivering a responsive and accessible PALS & Bereavement service for our service users.


The Trust is located on two sites and although this post is based at Sutton, we are looking to appoint an individual who is willing to work cross site as necessary.


  • The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust is committed to an integrated Trustwide Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) that provides high quality, responsive support to patients, relatives, carers and staff. The Trust also offers a Bereavement Service and part of the Medical Examiner Officer role is to coordinate with the relevant internal and external teams to ensure that this process is as efficient and swift as possible so that families are supported at the time of the patient's death.
  • As The PALS Officer, the post holder will provide telephone, online and face to face support and advice to those who contact the help centre and at the bedside of inpatients; liaising with other colleagues in the organisation to resolve concerns as required.
  • As the MEO, the post holder will also work with the manager of the service to ensure that the processes on the death of a patient are completed respectfully, correctly and in a timely way, acting as a point of contact and source of advice for relatives of deceased patients, healthcare professionals, coroner and registration services. This will also include providing support to the medical examiners in their role in scrutinising the circumstances and causes of death.

  • Assess patients' concerns and others who access the service to determine their needs.
  • Provide an expert information resource, supporting and advising on services provided by the hospital.
  • Using their judgemental skills, respond efficiently and appropriately to concerns, complex issues including concern (previously referred to as informal complaints) and a range of enquires, ensuring these issues are resolved as quickly as possible and escalated where necessary.
  • Provide a liaison service for people who wish to discuss aspects of their illness or their treatment and support them in putting them in touch with the relevant staff.
  • Recognise when patients/visitors may need further professional support and to provide appropriate information and referrals to colleagues as necessary.
  • Ensure that all raised cases are recorded on Datix.
  • Respond to matters of concern which patients/carers may wish to raise and to act as a facilitator, providing advice, support and direction, ensuring that issues are resolved as quickly and efficiently as possible.
